This was about 10 years ago. We were on the boat heading out, and the DM asked us where we wanted to go. Palancar Caves was the call, and that is where we went. The DM took us down just outside the wall, and just outside the wall is where we stayed the entire dive. We just drifted past the outside of all the coral formations. A number of times I pointed at obvious and inviting access points as if to say "Aren't we going in?", but no, we just drifted along the outside until the dive was over.
For the second dive, we went to Las Palmas. The DM announced that he would check the current before the dive. He jumped in, submerged a little, and then came up, declaring we were in the right spot to begin the dive. As we descended, the tiny bits of débris passing by sure seemed to indicate the current was going the other way. We reached the reef and started to swim, clearly heading into the current. We went on that way for perhaps 10 minutes before we met another dive group going the other way. I imagine the DM of that group must have given our DM a "WTF?" look, because we turned around at that point. We quickly glided over the territory we had gone through at the beginning of the dive, and we spent the rest of the dive drifting over a sandy ocean floor.
I complained to the operation owner, and she explained that the DM we had had for that dive was a from some sort of freelance DM pool, and I was offered my money back. That was nice, but I don't go on dives hoping to get my money back. I go on dives hoping to have a great experience.
