Black Coral:
I would kindly take u out and drown u if u really did not want to learn what life has dealt people who service the dive industry full time.

Black Coral:
"Dive with Troy from Pelagic Ventures. He is a canadian that has a relaxing charter system will take you where people are qualified and fishing in between the dives for the surface interval. What a relaxing day and starting at 9 30 AM you can sleep in or have a relaxing breakfast"

A nice writeup, but I'm not sure if I'd want him promoting my business.:D

BlackCoral:
Understand that is why the instructors adnd divemasters make squat.
BlackCoral:
If people tip for service they should you take care of them and make sure they do not do something stupid. It only is a token of appreciation and a job well done. DO YOU TIP THE TENNIS INSTRUCTOR OR GOLF PRO FOR THE LESSON. WHY DO YOU THINK IF PEOPLE DO NOT TIP DO WE REALLY WANT TO TAKE THEM BACK OUT THE NEXT DAY FOR A DIVE. I KNOW I WOULD NOT. PEOPLE EXPECT THE PLAIN OLD SERVICE AND IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM THEY SHOULD TIP WELL $5.00 PER TANK IS A MIN PER BOAT TANK AND THAT MAKES THE DM NOTHING ONLY ONE BEER WHILE CLEANING UP WHAT IS THAT. MY STUDENTS ARE TOLD AT LEAST 10 PER TANK THEREFORE 20 FOR A 2 TANK TRIP. IF THEY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THEN MORE IS EXPECTED. THIS IS NOT A SPORT FOR THE POOR FOLK BUT THE PEOPLE THAT CAN GO OUT AND DIVE AND LEARN NEED TO PAY SINCE WE ARE NO LONGER IN THE 80'S AND THIS IS A BUSINESS. IF YOU CAN AFFORD A CLASS, BOAT TRIP THEN YOU CAN AFFORD TO TIP OTHERWISE GO DO SOMETHING ELSE. ARMCHAIR WANNABEES WATCH TV TO SEE THE OCEAN GO BACK TO YOUR CHAIR. TIP AND TAKE CARE OF INSTRUCTORS AND DM FOR TEACHING AND GUIDING AND MATING OTHERWISE THERE WILL BE NO ONE LEFT TO TAKE PEOPLE OUT OUR TEACH THEM.

GOT IT AND UNDERSTAND IT

They make squat because they are in a field that requires little training and there is a surplus of people willing to the job. Hopefully they knew that before they entered the field.

I don't "got it", crappy attitude=crappy tip

soooooo, gimme a big smile and maybe, just maybe you'll get a tip. Just keep making those divers happy. We really need you. Could you get me a coke.

Let's see $20 tip for a two tank morning dive, 20 people on the boat=400, double that for an afternood dive. You think the DM should be making $800 a day + wage. You also think diving is a rich persons sport. Get a clue.

Whoa...less yelling, please. :shakehead
Why should I tip someone who does a crappy job or someone who doesn't do anything? I don't use the services of a divemaster, so what would I be tipping for? A friendly smile?

Interesting thread...

Over here, tipping is a non-issue. A 15% tip is included in the wages so I rarely tip. Only when someone truly goes above and beyond, then they get a little extra.

I understand things are a little different on your side of the pond. :)

I visited the Keys last year, did some dives out of Boynton too (Splashdown Divers). I'm happy to give a $5 tip per tank if it's customary. I did tip the DM $20 when he'd fixed the mouthpiece that fell off of my reg at 80 feet. No problem. :)

GOT IT AND UNDERSTAND IT

Hi.

Sorry BlackCoral, but I'm gonna be frank.

I quit reading your post about 1/3 of the way through. Lighten up and try to post something comprehensible that will elicit a good, or at least compassionate response. Like in the spirit of the original post. Try to win over your compatriates and customers through heartfelt genuinity and plainold charisma. The hit rate is about 1% for wild assed gunslingers on a bender, or maybe less.

Nevertheless, dive safe and have a great time!

I agree. I enjoy getting tips, and I enjoy giving them. Even small tips are appreciated by most people.

My tip is don't bet on 3 legged horses......Why not just people what you want/expect for your services & let them pay that amount, why all the secrecy...

OK, since the OP had just finished a class in Monterey, I'll add my own perspective. I'm a recently certified DM in the Monterey area. I went for DM not out of a hope to make money, but to further my diving education. (Note to people considering it: I learned much more from that process than from my previous classes and dive experience.) Nobody makes any significant money from the dive industry in Monterey. I've helped with a couple of classes (probably a total of about 30 hours of my time, so far), not out of mercenary desire, but because I love diving and feel like sharing the experience. Frankly, I would be a bit embarrassed if someone offered a tip, because I work full time in a field that uses my Ph.D. That's not why I do it.

On the other hand, I certainly wouldn't have taken it amiss if someone had offered to buy lunch or a beer. My expenses for the class are emphatically not paid unless the class is over 7 or 8 students, so it actually costs me money to help you learn. That's the way the industry works here. You may earn a token shop discount, but not money. So a sincere "thank you" would be appreciated.

I realize that people really did not understand that we make choices to do this full time and if we want to get a career doing something else that is great but with the pay and lifestyle that u expect on vacation people will only have the dive boats and operators since the instructors and DM's will not be able to afford the lifestyle and what will happen. We will all learn that this will not happen in our lifetime but we can expect it soon. That is why we can arrive to some places in the world to have a captain and mate and no DM in the water since they can't afford that part already. This is happening more and more. That is why people can get into the water and drown becasue no one is responsible for them. I have always thought that u get trained and become self suffiecient without your instructor holding your hand but that is not what is happening with people now. Why do you think people do not listen and end up DEAD. If people would pay and afford to tip then we would have the part time people become full time and we would be responsilbe. That is what I meant by taking people out and drowning them. It happens more and more since the companies can not afford the extra pay for the inwater service then we will lose more and more.

I for one want a ride to the reef, a briefing from someone that has been there before would be nice, capt, mate, DM, doesn't really matter. The coast guard requires Master, mate, deckhand, engineer, steward, depending on the vessel. Everyone else is classed non-essential.

You picked a low paying career, deck hands, life guards, park rangers, boat riggers, mountain guides, all make low wages and people's lives depend on them. They do it because they enjoy what they're doing and don't expect people to subsidize them.

When was the last time you tipped a security guard for keeping you safe?

That is right but understand if we do not take care of those people the careers and enjoyment will disappear and what are we left with. Tipping a security guard for the night happens all the time. I do see the exotic dancers tip them every night to take care of the rif raf they understand they need to.
