I accept tips..I also tip people that deserve it,even in cases where other people do not. I tip the plumber, electrican, telephone tech, whoever performs a service for me that I feel they did it properly and efficiently.I appreciate it and thank them.My receiving a tip also tells me that my assistance to a student was appreciated by them and they felt it worthwhile..I get tips often..

Understand that is why the instructors adnd divemasters make squat. If people tip for service they should you take care of them and make sure they do not do something stupid. It only is a token of appreciation and a job well done. DO YOU TIP THE TENNIS INSTRUCTOR OR GOLF PRO FOR THE LESSON. WHY DO YOU THINK IF PEOPLE DO NOT TIP DO WE REALLY WANT TO TAKE THEM BACK OUT THE NEXT DAY FOR A DIVE. I KNOW I WOULD NOT. PEOPLE EXPECT THE PLAIN OLD SERVICE AND IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM THEY SHOULD TIP WELL $5.00 PER TANK IS A MIN PER BOAT TANK AND THAT MAKES THE DM NOTHING ONLY ONE BEER WHILE CLEANING UP WHAT IS THAT. MY STUDENTS ARE TOLD AT LEAST 10 PER TANK THEREFORE 20 FOR A 2 TANK TRIP. IF THEY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THEN MORE IS EXPECTED. THIS IS NOT A SPORT FOR THE POOR FOLK BUT THE PEOPLE THAT CAN GO OUT AND DIVE AND LEARN NEED TO PAY SINCE WE ARE NO LONGER IN THE 80'S AND THIS IS A BUSINESS. IF YOU CAN AFFORD A CLASS, BOAT TRIP THEN YOU CAN AFFORD TO TIP OTHERWISE GO DO SOMETHING ELSE. ARMCHAIR WANNABEES WATCH TV TO SEE THE OCEAN GO BACK TO YOUR CHAIR. TIP AND TAKE CARE OF INSTRUCTORS AND DM FOR TEACHING AND GUIDING AND MATING OTHERWISE THERE WILL BE NO ONE LEFT TO TAKE PEOPLE OUT OUR TEACH THEM.

GOT IT AND UNDERSTAND IT

As a DM, tips mostly came in the form of cash, food or beer. As an instructor, I occasionally receive a tip, often in the form of things more interesting and creative: restaurant gift certificate, a box of chocolates, offer to host a website for a year, round of golf (along with a barbeque and a big bag of fresh potatoes dug that day), a jar of homemade crabapple jelly. As an instructor, I don't expect tips, but it is always gratifying to know that a student wanted to give one.

I have yet to receive a tip, but I usually have students who offer to buy me lunch. I think most instructors realize that you can't make a living teaching scuba, and do it because it's just cool to see new divers experience life underwater. A tip offer would be nice every now and then, but I'd probably decline it.

Why can't you people just tell me how much it is before I decide if I buy the service? This is age old question, and I hate to stand there thinking if and how much should I tip not to feel cheated or not to feel like I am cheap because someone else can afford to tip more.

Yeah it's great to reward people who do the job better than others but when I read crap like BlackCoral's above, I just want to stay away from charters in countries where tipping is commonplace... Let the employers observe who does good job and do the rewarding - instead of me. I am sure they get feedback. I want to enjoy my holiday. Geesh, back to my hole..

Understand that the industry pays like crap the instructor does not set the price the shop does and that is the problem we are paid like dirt if u are full time in the industry it is the part time instructor that does not look at the business side since they are just here for the party and fun while real people do the work needed so that people will have dive boats and charters and shops to go to. If the industry decides to charge more and pay more we all would be better off and OUT OF A JOB since people like u do not pay and understand what life is really like in the PARADISE so to speak. Rent is more, food is more u just vacation we live there. GOT IT I sure hope so since I would kindly take u out and drown u if u really did not want to learn what life has dealt people who service the dive industry full time.

You're the one that needs to be doing something else.

Understand that the instructor chose to accept the job. Don't like the pay in the dive industry? Then find another job.

So what you are saying is that someone has kidnapped you and forces you to work for next to nothing? Or is it something else? Tell me just how "life" forces you to "service the dive industry full time", please.

The instructors that I know are instructors in their spare time for fun. They all have regular jobs outside instructing.

Then my thoughts on DMs, unless they're unpaid and working on a boat to set my gear up, haul me in and out of the water, etc, I don't think they need a tip. If I wanted to show my gratitude I would show up with starbucks and krispy cremes for everyone.
