For my advanced open water course. Where is a decent place to stay and what is there to do on a lonely Saturday night in Findlay??

Good luck, Tubby. If you really don't want to go into town, Gilboa does have a cabin or two that can be rented (if available). There are, however, a few hotels right off of I-75 and, of course, it's a college town--although nothing like OSU.

Restaurants and bars will be semi-busy, but nothing extremely exciting is my guess. Might be there on Sunday, but not sure yet. Feel free to "PM" (personal message) me if you like. I live about 1 hour away.

Stinky's bar is just down the road from the quarry. We were there on a Saturday night not too long ago and watched as 3 different bachelorette parties came through. Each party was in a bus and were bar hopping. Definitely some interesting people watching, you just never know what you're going to see there ;)

I believe one of my dive buddies will have a group up there that weekend. Look for a big white van near the far set of steps. He'll have a couple of white canopy tents set up and maybe a couple of extra canopies too. He's a short guy (5'7") and wears a yellow and black drysuit--he spends a lot of time at the quarry and would know all the interesting things to do. Heck if nothing else you could sit around and listen to him swap stories and tell lies in the evening--he's got some good ones :D

for an even more swingin' night, run to Ottawa..

yee-haw!

I was thinking of going to gilboa this weekend, i was wondering if anybody knows what the vis would be like. I was also wondering if you need dive insurance to dive their. Thanks marc

Vis depends on when you're there. Friday evening and early Saturday morning should be fine probably 30 feet or so, after students get in and start mucking it up Saturday the visibility will get increasingly worse but usually not worse than 15 feet.

What kind of dive insurance? If you're taking students, yes. If you're planning to dive on the deep side I would definitely recommend having some sort of insurance (DAN, etc.) just in case. Gilboa doesn't require divers to have insurance if that's what you're asking.

Well my dive buddy ended up having to work instead of going diving this weekend so y'all are on your own for entertainment ;)

If you prefer to skip the bars, you could always head over the Coffee Amici in Findlay. They have entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, and usually it's decent.

My wife and I are going to be there saturday morning for a couple dives this weekend.

Sorry I missed the Gilboa weekend. BUT, I am going to Port Clinton Monday morning to help with the PIB clean up day. Hmmmm, community service AND diving!!
