H2Andy:
basically, DIR is another name for the Hogarthian system, tweaked and refined.
It is more like the equipment of DIR diving is a subset of the equipment of Hogarthian diving.

DIR is more mindset than equipment. Granted, some will argue for days about where to stow the backup compass and which watch to wear, but that is a minority.

well, both the Hogarthian and the DIR systems are holistic systems. Hogarthian
diving is not just about equipment (just like DIR isn't).

i bet you anything a side by side comparison of the two will prove most educational

H2Andy:
yeah dude... read the articles and think about it

awesome! i had missed that, thank you

it really confirms my impression from George Irvine's 1995 article that
DIR is another name for an "updated" Hogarthian system. back in 1995,
there wasn't even a word for "DIR" yet... but there was the Hogarthian
system.

as the Hogarthian system was tweaked by the WKPP guys, it was renamed
DIR.

that's my theory, and i'm sticking to it

The Deco Stop has a article by Lamar English to that effect too. I would cross post, but I don't want to violate TOS. Just go to the article section of the board and look for "setting it strait"

Edit: That's actually about something else...Still a good read though.

Andy,

I agree that Hogarthian is more than just equipment. It is a "mindset". It's about safety and efficiency... "risk management". (I'm referencing a 11/05 article by Jeff Petersen.)

Still, I think the guys that brought us Hogarthian... English, Gavin, and Main... would probably not say that DIR and Hog are the same. In fact, they might say that Hogarthian has been perverted by DIR. (Oh... I'm gonna take grief on that one! No offense intended guys. :D )

Or... you can go here: http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=36855 where Jarrod gives us some insight, and be sure to check out post 114 from "William Main". It's his only post on our fair board and I verified that it was indeed "Hogarth" that posted it.

very interesting...

Did he ever post again NetDoc?

He promised to, but he is not "computer literate". I have his number still and will call him after I get back from Chicago. He promised to write his version of cave diving history for our portal.
