2. It was moved into DIR
But it was a mistake and was moved back in short order.
catherine96821:
3. as people proceeded to give our reasons, it was considered combative or mean.
Only the blatant insults are considered as such.... words like "Nazi, Kool-Aid drinkers, cult, religion, rigid, uncompromising" are being used to describe what folks think of a system of diving.
catherine96821:
It was completley taken over by the pro-DIR's. thats kinda the point, it is not cool to say why you don't dive DIR around here.
Really? Then why have so many folks (like you) been allowed to continue posting anti-DIR messages in this thread?

It's not saying that you don't dive DIR that's not cool. It's putting down those who do that's not cool. Just as putting down those who don't dive DIR is not cool.

TSandM, oh, I do, thats why I hang around and listen. I think when you said "stubborn" some of us got our backs up. Then, I realized, yea, I am stubborn. Relying on only myself is the only thing that has kept me alive. If i were diving where you are, I am sure i would be in your camp. But i keep finding myself all over--no uniformity in my dive life. It just would never work for my lifestyle. I do see that everyone gains a lot from it and I have posted to that effect many times that you may not know about. Having done that, I felt pretty safe saying whatever I said. I know for me I was sincere about the segregation on a dive being very practical, and thats all DIR-ers mean when there is a discussion about not teaming up with us. You know I love your posts.

TSandM, there is something to be excited about there and it's good to tell others. It's the method and tone of a few that sparks debate. And on the other side it is the vocal ones who are so anti-DIR. Both of these groups are firmly entrenched and believe there is no middle ground.

Well, Lynne said stubborn. I know she did not mean it personaly, so why can't I say...rigid? I did not realize it was moved back. My bad. It's fine, I am not upset, it is just that the name of the thread was "why-not". I perceive tunnel vision, I can't change that this is the way I see it. I have had long talks with DIR people who use computers, dive solo, etc. I don't get it really.

"Really? Then why have so many folks (like you) been allowed to continue posting anti-DIR messages in this thread?" my answer:..because that was the name of the thread? please tell me what I am missing.

It is like somebody says..."hey lets wear costumes and have a Halloween party" and then people come to the party (enter the forum) and say "you know, you should not be celebrating Halloween". I thought the poster wanted to hear why those of us that DO NOT dive DIR, not from the loyalists.

Don't know who you're talking to here, but I'm gonna answer...

Almost every DIR trained diver who's posted has said they would gladly team up with anyone on a recreational dive who is not DIR trained.... as long as they have a safe attitude. I have said before and will say again... MOST of my dives are NOT with a DIR trained buddy.

AS for location... There are still very few DIR trained divers in my location. When I took DIRf, there were none that I knew of. Folks don't take the training because of their location. They take it because they see the potential benefits to ALL of the dives they do. I found it extremely beneficial to the dives I did in Palau.... my very first WWW dives BTW. The coolest complement I had was from someone who told me they enjoyed watching me dive because I looked so relaxed and was obviously having fun.

BTW - most of my dives there were buddiless :eek_2:

I see DIR training as of no additional value; Personally, I'm already a safe diver and was DIR long before there was an acronym to (claim to) describe it in the first place. As I said earlier on: take what you need and leave the rest is usually a good way to go about learning things: no one has the corner on the market of knowledge anyway...

to answer the question

because everyone gets so dang hung up in it one way or the other!

and yes I have a gue cave 1 card, no I am not DIR as far as GUE is concerned.

Ridgid and uncompromising are considered blatant insults for those who dive DIR? The last two are the primary argument against and it's interesting you label them as the example of inappropriate comments.

There is without question a certain protection for DIR divers on this board among some of the mods. Some DIR divers use much worse words to describe PADI or Solo divers for example and those posts remain without interference. Add a post that refers to why not DIR and boy there is immediate attention.

yep

That is because DIR is considerably more flexible than many detractors realize.

Every time I read about black drysuits being required, I know I am in the presence of ignorance.

_I_ question it.

Post links to a few such posts.

Does this mean that only certain people should be allowed to comment?
