The Internet, or at least Scubaboard seems pretty informative about DIR though, given that many have posted their fundies experiences day by day. The reason I haven't done it? I haven't heard of a class within 1000 miles of me and I just don't have the time or money right now to make a special trip for the class. Plus I already know everything there is to know....

Hmnnnn,

I don't believe that I called DIR or anyone following DIR a name. Did I?
No ... my comments are not directed at you or anyone else in particular, but rather at the tenor and direction threads like this one invariably take in general ...

As I said, it's a minority on both sides that speak the loudest and unfortunately perpetuate the battle between both sides and keep the flame burning. There were pretty good posts by OE2X and Dennis (divers on both sides) that could have ended the thread on a positive note but those discussions never stop. At the end, arent we all divers who wish to have a great time, whatever the means?

So in reality, that's why I have avoided DIR-F: the baggage.
What baggage is that, Doc?

Do you mean the mean-spirited Anti-DIR insults and bashing you see so frequently on ScubaBoard (and elsehwhere) whenever you mention the acronym?

Or is it the baggage of the connotations of the "Doing it Right" name given to the style of diving? After all, the many who don't care to take that line of training will automatically assume you think they are "doing it wrong" if they didn't take the class.

Oh, maybe it's the baggage of all the anti-DIR rants and defensiveness you get if you advocate the great training you got to others?

well, the thing that I find amusing is: 1. the thread was named why NOT, 2. It was moved into DIR 3. as people proceeded to give our reasons, it was considered combative or mean. It was completley taken over by the pro-DIR's. thats kinda the point, it is not cool to say why you don't dive DIR around here.

Shouldn't you all be diving? it's a day off.:05:

Oh man......

I was wondering why our Canadian TV sucked today...we had no 'Merikun's working on it.

Had to go to my Canadian brokerage account to see what day it was in the real world...

catherine, I'm not sure that's fair. Floater, very early on, gave a reasonable list of reasons NOT to go DIR. I tried to give some as well. I do think, in some ways, getting the reasons NOT to go DIR from DIR people makes really good sense, because at least we know whether the stereotypes are valid or not, at least from some personal experience.

It is interesting that so many people who have gone and gotten training from GUE are so positive about their experience and so willing to recommend it. Whenever I see a bunch of people excited and happy with something they've done, it makes me wonder if there isn't something worthwhile there.
