They're going to revoke your kool-aid.

I did a dive on saturday where two of my buddies were wearing doubles that had a single yoke connector on the manifold, j-valves and no octo. The DIR-concept of team was not terribly apparently, and the champagne bubbles on yoke o-ring connectors were flying due to lack of a pre-dive bubble check. Still when it came to moving around 2,500-lbs of rock as a team I think we did pretty good and didn't squash anyone which was more important on that dive than worrying about running out of gas in 20 feet of water. I think I solo'd on several occasions when shuttling around 55-gal plastic lift drums, too... Somehow I didn't panic when I found myself alone in 20 feet of water with only around 140 cubic feet of gas on my back and no DIR buddy...
Ah ... sounds like you went out on a working dive with JD and Bruce ... two of the most experienced ... and unorthodox ... divers you'll ever meet. Classic "DIR meets DIY" ... and yet both "sides" get along famously and get some really productive things done for the whole diving community.

Yeah ... that's what it's like in real life.

This argument schtuff is strictly for the Internet ... :D

Correct on all counts =)

Hello
I'm a newbie to this site, but like you, I've decided to jump in with both feet. Like all configurations, DIR has it's good and bad points. The only real way to find out which works best for you is to try them all. I realize this can be a time consuming and sometimes daunting task, but over time, you will develop what is DIR for YOU! This may be the classic DIR setup, or not. As you have already been advised, keep an open mind, and talk with more experienced divers using the different set ups. They will all have good advice to offer. In the end, find out what works best for YOU, not necessarily what someone tells you is best for you.
Best of luck,
Bear

Oh, good we are doing this again? I agree, but, I was wondering, do you have to promise certain things in order to "be DIR'? When you get your cert, do you take a vow? And also I was wondering what the written exam is like?

No vows... :D

I don't think one should go through GUE training with the aim of "being DIR" at the end. The learning process (for me) is endless and I'll probably never be "DIR." I do enjoy learning to dive safer and constantly striving to improve my skills though.

There is no written exam for Fundies.

I could talk about it, but.................well then, you know, I would have to............ well, take you for a long walk on a short pier.

The real thing to worry about is how much blood you have to give.
