Why is spit such a good defogger?

I'll tell you what though, pee sure does a good job in jelly stings. And there's always someone willing to pee on you on a dive boat!! :D

I was going to reply, but on second thought, there is no reply to that statement. :11:

I don't think that's what the advertisement meant when it said "warm shower on board".

I've always used spit and it has always worked for me.

I tell my students the following, which is always preceded with laughs or EEwww's from some of the women.

"To keep you mask from fogging up, spit in it then quickly rinse the spit out. Remember... The Greener The Cleaner... So make them good ones..."

Of course I also use See Drops when in open water, it just seems to last longer than spit. Especially on those long hangs below the thermal at 4 degree C water durring deco.

I'm a fan of toothpaste myself. Works as well as spit but lasts a little longer. Plus it keeps my mask shiny, white and void of cavities. :)

I have forgotten to spit in my mask on occasion and the mask definitely fogs up. I have to keep rinsing it with water and clearing it since I won't surface and I haven't learned how to spit effectively at 100 ft.

I carry a bottle of 500psi defog in my bc for students who won't turn their head when they ask me to defog their mask. For myself I never use anything but good ol spit. And not being chauvanistic but have worked with several female students who tried to use their own and it just would not work? Always ended up using the defog. Oh and mine seems to work even better and last longer if I've had pepperoni pizza the night before. Wonder if the extra acid that I'm also tasting helps?

I keep the bottle of Sea Gold in the sleeve of my wetsuit dont even know its in there.
I found out the hard way that it floats at pretty high rate of speed when you open the pocket of your BC under the water.
I found it to be pretty handy spot to keep it. I now keep it there all the time even when not working with the students and have found it to be pretty handy.

I've noticed that the effectiveness of spit depends greatly on what I've had to eat or drink recently, in addition to how hydrated I am. The thicker, more globular my spit, the better it seems to work (up to a point). Milk, especially, seems to help my provide the proper spit for effective defog, IMO.
