Trip Report Why I Won't Be Returning to Cozumel-Part 1,2&3

Perhaps my bar is low, but I expect poor medical treatment in 3rd world countries. Glad everything turned out for the better.

First, I don't consider MX third world. Look up your definitions.

Second, I was recommended by DAN to a hospital in CZM for possible bends. I was seen by the admitting doctor, the emergency room supervisor, the emergency room intern, and the DCS doctor within four hours. I was given IV and oxygen during my visit. I considered it better treatment than I have received in the USA (first world, btw). If I were to be treated for DCS (again), Cozumel and DAN work for me.

If you use the economic definition I've been through a number of towns in Mexico that would qualify.

My experience with medical care in Mexico is mixed. I was able to see a doctor (another lady that worked with Dr Piccolo) fairly quickly, but the facility was well used. The doctor cleaned it out just enough to diagnose the ear infection, when I got back I still had to have my primary care further clean my ear out as it wasn't draining quickly enough.

Despite the fact that I was likely charged the gringo price is was 50% less than what my primary care doctor charges for a cash price (I was between health insurance at the time).

Mexico is a mixed bag, as are many countries. I'm sure the medical care is top notch in the capitol AND in Cozumel, which is what we're talking about here. Coz is not the third world. Coz is more like a suburb of Houston.

Same apply to most popular diving destinations favoured by tourists.
Most divers would have good diving/travel insurance to cover the expenses. Money talks.

You have been treated for DCS in the US as well, or is it just some other completely unrelated medical treatment?

I have been treated for a lot of things in the USA, but not DCS. I would rate the treatment I got in Coz as good or better than what I have received in the US (with regards to treatment, questioning, number of doctors attending and a specialist that came in just for me).

I'm 55. I've been to the hospital rodeo. I would rate Coz first world.

The term "Third World" arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either NATO or the Warsaw Pact. I've been to a number of disadvantaged neighborhoods in the US, none of them lacked basics like running water or had people living in huts made out of what looked like tree branches and a thatched roof. Where as you can see that only a few streets off the main drag in Tulum.
