This is often repeated, but there isn't much evidence to support it.

^ the real answer.

It still raises the question of why spend so much time and effort to support a brand that doesn't want to support you? Just go with a more reasonable option like us at Deep6. lol

This is pretty much what we have been doing for the past six years.
Landon - what percentage of your buyers service their own regs?

Raises hand.

The point is it's offered and allowed, even encouraged. My neighbor can't change a tire or change his oil. But the choice is there for those of us who want to.

Plus I got sick of waiting 4 to 6 weeks for my regs.

Hard to say... we don't really track it, so any answer is anecdotal, but I would guess somewhere around 15% give or take a wide margin of error. lol

Remember this is largely off-set by the fact that they get a free first service so don't need to do it. Keeping this in mind, there are many that plan to do it in the future after they utilize their free option.

So for them they won't begin self-servicing until after 4 years of ownership.

I would agree with @formernuke though, the percentage doesn't really matter, what matters is that the option is there.

There are also customers that want to have kits on hand for their local shop, for repairs on a vacation, etc.

They don't plan to service personally, but the parts access aids them in getting service done by a third party.

The issue is what companies will sell you the parts and train you? That isn't a long list. Why would you jump through hoops to get parts and/or training? While "close enough" make work most or possibly always, I'd rather have the exact parts (as sometimes reg techs will use something they deem "close enough") and be told exactly what I need to do (including tools) to service my regs.

Deep 6 has an excellent design that is easy to service. Now I am partial to Deep 6, but only due to the quality of their products and service. That happened before I became friends with Chris and Landon. But don't take my word for it, take @rsingler's regulator service course. He is impartial in my view on regulator design and did state when I took the course with him that the Deep 6 is a really good design. He did not specify any weaknesses in the design or servicing.

Shop in Seattle has been trying to get parts for my regs from the manufacturer for almost two months now. For me, that indicates i would be better off ordering my own parts kits when I can get them so that i will have them net time I need service.

The further i go in diving the less respect I have for LDSs.

It's often not the lds, especially right now. My shops simply can't get a lot of things

It's a bloody nuisance not being able to source the service kits for Apeks. This means there's a market for third party kits. LDS service tech was saying that the price of the service kits have increased for them too; something around $35 each

Kind of don't care if you've one or two regs, but when you've 10 or more it's ridiculous to look at $1k+ for servicing them all. This is why one would look to servicing one's own kit -- could even take a service tech's course and buy all the specialist tools for that amount!

You may want to mail your regs to Octopus Gardens in Port Townsend, but call them first to make sure they have the service kits for whatever regs you have.
