Why do you have to attend Nitrox classes in order to use Nitrox?

Read and understand the book, do the PEs and take a final exam should be enough for this one for most folks. Perhaps some folks can't learn without someone closely managing and directing their learning experience. But because folks are making $$ teaching classes, it is not likely to change any time soon.
Trying not to put the poster down, but YOU NEED TO GO THROUGH THE CERT FIRST. Nitrox gives you a higher partial pressure of Oxygen. Pure Oxygen becomes toxic at 20 ft. Yes you just grab the tank and breathe same as air, but since nitrox has a higher partial pressure of oxygen, there is a limit on the depth that you can go. In the class you will learn about PPo2 being a 1.4 to a 1.6. If you haven't taken the class that doesnt mean anything to you. Yes before you say anything air does become toxic at a certain depth, but it is way deeper than recreation limits. So, in summary if you see a tank sitting somewhere with a nitrox sticker on it, do not grab it and use it for a dive with out analyzing the gas in it first. What would happen if you grabed a 50% decompression bottle that looks just like a regular al 80 tank. You went on a dive to 120 ft. The MOD (Max Operating Depth) on 50% is 70ft. You would have become subjected to Oxygen Toxicity, and you might not return from that dive.
Now, I'm not trying to deture anyone from breathing Nitrox. Nitrox has many great benefits and the class should definetly be taken. It is very easy, and once you start using it, you won't think anything of the procedures, just another step in dive planning and configuration procedures.

The OP wasn't asking "IF a cert was necessary", he was asking why the class was necessary to get the cert.
The simple answer from a non-instructor is : no you don't have to take a class from a human. You can easily learn the knowledge required to dive nitrox on your own, and do the course online from several certification agencies.
the answer from most instructors will be: Yes, you should take the class from an instructor. This is because (as instructors claim) they want to make sure that you're a good enough diver that if you DO dive close to your MOD, that you won't kill yourself because your buoyancy skills suck.
- In reality (from a non-instructor) - if you can't dive and maintain a depth - you SHOULD know that on your own, without an instructor telling you. Nitrox diving just requires a few additional steps in planning the dive, it's not rocket science.
Also remember; many people will point to several myths about nitrox. For all intents and purposes, AIR is NITROX - it's nitrox 21% - also nitrox doesn't always cost more than air. It just depends on where you get it.

What happens if you do get the wrong mix and you went past your MOD on a bad mix?
