Neglect, abuse, and those infernal balls that *someone* *somewhere* thought would be a good idea.

Any second-stage regulator stowing system which has a propensity for causing free flows, even fairly slow ones, is by definition a *bad* *idea*, at least in my book. I no longer bother counting the number of times I've seen those things cause free flows (as would be expected when you seal a couple inches of air column onto the upward-pointing mouthpiece of a second stage).

If there are enough holes punched in the balls (hehe, by nail gun wielding DMs?), they likely wouldn't cause so many free flows, but as sold... *sigh*. I suppose the silver lining is that the octos tend to fall out of the balls on any significant entry, thereby flooding the octo and ball, preventing free flowing. :shakehead:

Help me out here please ClayJar. What's the infernal ball please ? Got a weblink or picture ? Sorry if I'm being a doofus.... (good American word eh?)

Here's one of the hideous devices. :D

You jam the mouthpiece of the octo into the opening on the bottom, and the ball with octo dangles from the ring. By itself, this wouldn't be too bad, except there's an opening at the top (for the ring, of course). The mouthpiece is effectively sealed at the lower opening, so if the ball and reg are full of air, you'll get anywhere from a light dribble to a significant stream of bubbles coming out of the ring hole.

I've never had this problem

Most brand name octos are the same quality as the primary they are molded after.
If you were breathing off of your octo all of the time, you'd notice an alarming increase of problems with your primary.

My turn to be a doofus I guess. What is the use of this thing?

Oh! On the topic of the thread: I never had any issue with my backup. I have changed my main regulator, but not my backup. And I'd do it again.

Cheers!

They are also called dirtcollectors.:D
Especialy when the diver uses some kind of snaphook/bold to fix it to his/her BC and the ball stays on at ALL times.
We see this on a regular basis, when they bring in their regs for service, with the ball in place :11:

I like my octo around my neck.
