Why are some people so easily excitable about choosing to use or not a piece of gear?

Because everyone wants to be right, and no one wants to admit that there may actually be more than one way to skin a cat.

JungleJoe:
You will find this as others have said in ANY type of internet forum, from fishkeeping, motorcycles, cars, skiing, shooting and firearms etc.....

there are always the Triggers that start what ppl call flame wars

Trigger questions are either asked by the unknowing, and unwittingly invoke the flame

or by a "troll" someone who wants to stir up trouble.

Trigger words or questions that are universal are things like Politics/Religion/Abortion questions.....

Trigger words on here,..... Well I'll start a list, I am sure others can add to it

DIR vs ?
Hose Length for Primary regs
Best BCD
Wing vs Jacket
Best Mask
Best Regulator
Cert card collections
PADI vs NAUI or others
Training methods
Nitrox vs Air
Best Wetsuit
Best Dry Suit

Those are the ones that come to mind, others can add to the list :)

Nikon vs. Canon (no need to add in Olympus because evryone knows they aren't real DSLR's) :D

Jungle Joe, how could you forget splits vs paddles/jets?

and weight belt vs weight integration or no ditchable weight at all with steel tanks and bp?

LSD vs online?

Colored gear vs all black gear?

Leisurepro :)

If you guys think SB is bad, you should wade through some of the 20+ page discussions that happen OVER and OVER again on the dressage BB I used to frequent regarding equipment. "Drawreins" is the dressage equivalent of "long hose" (except I'm for the latter and against the former), and "rollkur" is DIR all over again, only it's all women and it doesn't get nasty, it gets spiteful :)

This is too funny :D

The *ahem* long and short of it is that people feel threatened when they are told that there is a better way and that the gear they purchased with their hard earned dollars and are passionate about, is considered 'inferior' by a number of folks.

As final thought, remember, it's not about the length of your hose ... it's about the girth LOL.
