Why are some people so easily excitable about choosing to use or not a piece of gear?

LSD vs online?
Is this like getting your tanks filled on line. I know it is a typo, but could not resist.

howarde:
I prefer the LSD vs. Online debate.
Well, that belongs in the Grateful Dead forum ... :D

... no, come to think of it, that would be the LSD vs mushrooms debate ...

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Mike Veitch:
mushrooms

Yes, British Columbia had always had an excellent history of horticulture...:D

If you can't drink a dozen Canadian beer and still walk you must be a stroke. Ha Ha Ha

If I didn't spend every waking moment reading this board, I might be curious enough to check out how this issue plays out on sky-diving boards. You'd think there would be some interesting characters with definite attitudes about gear.

Also, I think it's interesting any time somebody says something about "what it's about". Of course to each of us it's about something different. I know I have a bad case of G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), and in just about every one of my endeavors, from guitars to motorcycles to snowboards to hiking, gear figures heavily. But only in diving is the gear so critical to survival in such an immediate way.

Also, I think more people from all different walks of life are interested in diving, compared to my other endeavors. Maybe that has some bearing on how defensive and snippy people get here.

At any rate, the threads where people get all emotional about something a lot of other people think is trivial are usually the most entertaining to read!

Now let me tell you how much better my Force Fins are than mortal fins...

Oh yeah.....most of those people that get so exciteable....have small penises :-)

You mean they have more than one???? Must make wearing a BP/W w/cotchstrap tough, where do you route it (don't tell me....around the neck).

I love the heated debates as long as they are kept gentlmanly (or womanly). I find as a newer diver, the passion some display when discussing a particular gear choice, use or configuration, will actually encourage me to do more research on the subject than I might have otherwise. God bless you all, from trolls to mods..and you to Tiny Tim.

Packhorse:
Because if you dont use aBP/W with a 7ft hose YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!!!!

Packhorse, you are totally wrong! You will die if you use a 7-foot hose. Quit spreading lies and misconceptions.

I gotta share this...!!

Some members know that I am usually friendly, easily approachable, and try to be helpful (sometimes I'm a grouch, but I try to keep that off the board), so I get PMs and Emails from members asking about things. I got one yesterday from a member who hasn't been active here lately, and a follow-up to my response about the board. I do hope it's okay if I share this anonymously....
I've been spending way too much time on a motorcycling board, the vibe there had gotten really negative so I've deleted my acct. and moved on. I really like it here, nice folks and a pleasent way to pass the time over the winter.

Those of us who have been fortunate enough to spend any time at all with the owner of this board know how delightful NetDoc can be in person, how much fun it is to chat and listen with him. I loved a tale he told me right after Dema when I was in Florida, giving his response to someone who asked him how is that SB is so successful - what makes it work. His answer was exactly this...

"I don't know. The members run it. :rofl3: Gotta' love it...!

I kinda chuckle when I see those threads where the poster comes across like an excited little girl when he/she has ordered a BP/W. It is followed by a couple dozen posts worth of back slapping and glad handing. Then we get a blow by blow history of the product delivery followed by more back slapping and glad handing posts. And so on.
I have never seen anything like that anywhere but on this board.
I surf, ski, have owned 7 motorcycles and have jumped out of aircraft. Most of my friends are bikers, surfers, divers, skydivers or a combination. Except for when a new tricked out scooter shows up, they just don't get that excited about the gear.
Now I also know guys who enjoy guns. I have collected a few myself. THOSE guys get fired up when a new piece is on the way.
