I just can't see any advantage to one over a high quality reg sitting under my chin on a nice short hose. I see plenty of disadvantages though.

How fast can you disconnect the inflator hose wearing gloves with one of these things on there?

I hear how one can control their bouyancy with their inflator/deflator in their mouth but whenever I've seen some one try it I get to say "I told you so".

Why would you want a method of controlling bouyancy that's different in an emergency than any other time? Nothing like looking around on your shoulder for something that you have in your mouth. IMO, inflators belong in your hand not in your mouth. I know, I know...the shoulder pull dump..something else I'd rather not have.

To disconnect the many I've seen is not a problem with the thickest of gloves due to the extra large external ribs on the quick disconnect.

I owned a Zeagle Tech one summer with the octo built into the inflator/deflator hose. While I really didn't care much for this system or the BC....Each to their own man........

(although they are actually manufactured by Apex, DIR/GUE's fave manufaturer) for around 6 years (400+ Dives) only problem i ever had was slight free flow before a dive, it seemed susceptible to salts drying on the seat. Usually i found that imersing in water would clear that problem, it has now been retired as some doofus dropped a tank on it, so thats one disadvantage. Have now swopped to a Seaquest airsource which my Gf has used for around 5 years, much neater, slimmer unit and only ever had same problem as my Octo + some free flow when dry. I have tried several ascents using it no problem.

IMHO for Rec diving it is far superior to the conventional setup.

Th eplus is that if you service it regularly as you would your normal reg then the inflator gets looked at as well. I have seen several stuck inflators which would have been avoided if they had ever been serviced

There are a few things in your statement I can't get my head around. First off,
DIR/GUE's fave manufaturer
- DIR AND GUE do not have a "fave manufaturer" or manufacturer.

More importantly, I seriously question "IMHO for Rec diving it is far superior to the conventional setup."

Please explain to me why the elimination of a single hose is such a big deal as to render it "far superior?" What possible advantages do you have, whereas I can list a myriad of disadvantages.

Why does Halcyon have "DIR" all over 100% of their products? Even the freaking pressure checkers have DIR on them...

Perhaps he should have said GUE's favorite manufacturer (especially given the interwoven corporate ownership).

Oh wait, there's the DIR trademark issue.

Yep, GUE & DIR have a favorite mfgr :)

Why would anyone think Apeks is GUE/DIR's favorite though? It's just a popular choice (at least untill Halcyon starts making regs).

[Don't take anything in this post too seriously]

isn't "DIR" a trademark of Halcyon? Isn't Halcyon owned by the founders of GUE?

I really don't get the philosophy of DIR with regards to regulators... They favored Scuba Pro for a time if I remember right... but SP regs aren't easy to disassemble. APeks on the other hand has a non-standard hose diameter which you have to change...just curious. Which reg brand does DIR/GUE recommend...really?

They do not recommend this. But they ought to think about it:

Watergill was current in the early 70's and was light years ahead of its time. Here is a picture of their amazing Failsafe first stage. It is two balanced piston regulators in series to form one big regulator. Either piston can fail and the regulator will still work. The Failsafe System regulator would also sense if the diver stopped breathing. Pressure would then build in the first stage, and slowly inflate the BC automatically, bringing the unconsious diver to the surface. I am not kidding. Then once on the surface, the regulator would emit a honking sound to attract attention.

Only some Apeks have the non-standard ports. I have DS4's that have only standard sized ports on them.
