Just how big is the superstructure? How much is there to see at the recreationaly level without limiting yourself to a really short dive?

There is plenty to see at the rec level on the island structure. This is where the crew steers the ship, the deck boss, the person incharge stands and watches everything going on issuing orders regarding the launching and landing of planes. There is also catwalks and at the back of the island is the smokestack that were built in to the island itself.Thats just the stuff that you can easily see from the outside. On the inside,is were the radar room was,the combat information center, captain and admirals quarters, radio room, navigation room, etc just to name a few.You would have to spend probably 2 weeks or better to see everything on the ship inside and out.

Try this link.It is from the USS Hornet site.It has a basic diagram of the bridge and what is where.Sroll down to the island and there is an interactive map with pics of the different rooms.
