Hey there, we're thinking of visiting Utila this year and the last time we stayed at Hotel Kayla (6-8 yrs ago) Captain Morgans was the dive op working there. At first glance there seems to be a couple options now but I'm wondering if anyone here has some recent first hand experience. Not looking for dive ops in Utila Town, just ones whose operations normally pick up divers on the cay and take them diving. Thanks!

There is only one dive operation based on the Cay nowadays, "We-Dive Utila". They will pick up from Sandy Cay.
Utila Cays Diving took over from Captain Morgans at Hotel Kaya 7-8 years ago but they closed last year due to the poor health of the owner.
We-Dive Utila is highly recommended, its owned and operated by Anke, she used to be the dive instructor at Utopia Resort and has been leading dives around Utila for 15+ years.
Sandy Cay is absolutely beautiful and highly recommended, except in very hot weather (no a/c). If a/c is important to you, another highly recommended rental in the area would be the Coral House or The Pineapple House on Treasure Beach.

Many thanks! that clears it up for me. And thanks for the lodging advice, we would be going in march so not too hot yet and if we get our "honeymoon suite" it's one of the rooms that seemed to have good airflow the two times we stayed previously. Do you know if Anke worked for Capt Morgans too? That name sounds awfully familiar

Anke may have worked at Captain Morgans , she's been around for 15-20 yrs but only worked at Utopia for about 8 years. She has been operating We-Dive Utila for the last 3-4 years. Have you checked to see if Kayla is open? After Utila Cays Diving closed down it seemed to be empty, at least for a few months.

I had the privilege of diving with Anka in 2017 and 2018 when she was the Dive Master for Utopia Village. She is a seasoned veteran and is very familiar with both the underwater and top side terrain in Utila and Pigeon Key. She made her home on Pigeon Key with her son at that time.

When Utopia Village decided to close during the pandemic and turn the resort over to the employees, Anka became the Operator of We-Dive Utila.

We-Dive Utila

She introduced me to my first whale shark in 2017. I will never forget!

I highly recommend We-Dive Utila and Anka.
