I dive a standard Hog rig with long hose and bungeed second stage. The long hose comes up across the chest, around the left side and across the back of the neck, and to the regulator in the mouth from the right. When responding to an OOA, you grab the long hose next to the regulator, duck your head, and extend it to the OOA diver. If there's a snorkle hanging on the mask, its an entanglement hazard. I might carry a folding snorkel in a pocket, but will not wear one on a mask underwater again.

Ah..... one of those. Did my rescue with someone who had a rig like that. Nobody wanted to be his buddy :D
Understand ya now!

Sure, if you mount your snorkel, like someone who's never used it, right next to the mask frame so it's pointing straight ahead of you when your face is down in the water. If you mount it like someone who knows how to snorkel, keeper high on the barrel and just a little off center on the back of your head. If you do that and uncoil your long hose to donate it will not foul.

SNORKEL GIRL SAYS, "YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A SURFACE AIR EMERGENCY!"

Hi- I'm a Dork. Don't you want to be a dork, too?

The inspiration for the snorkel-mounted dive flag- they want like $15 for these things!

Here's a picture of me showing that, yes, you can think about your snorkel while wearing PJs and pink fuzzy slippers:

You want proof that I'm a :dork2:?

In case you were wondering, yes, I did have all those pictures uploaded to photobucket before this thread was born. I think I answered the question without answering the question. Weird.

Several years ago my ear failed to clear and there were great reefs right there. Would have been a lot more fun had I had the snorkel.

Or just breathe from the reg.....

If I dove in lakes, caves or quarries I wouldn't bother with a snorkel. I consider it survival gear out in the ocean and a very useful piece of equipment on beach dives. I've been glad I had it on a few occasions. It's a big ocean and if you're out of air you're not a scuba diver anymore.

When working with students, otherwise it's home in my gear locker.

Typical teacher, do as I say not as I do.:mooner:

Reminds me of the Valley Girls who want to drive but can't pass the exam because they can't parallel park, "We don't need to parallel park, cause, like, we only drive to the mall.":D

Well, now that we have had our monthly snorkel thread and all of the usual suspects have restated their ironclad positions, like Dr Seuss, I ain't and you is and is and ain't will stand toe to toe till the end of time and never agree.

......

I see two potential problems:
  1. is that another potential tangle?
  2. when you really need it, you’ll reach back to where you can’t see and can’t check, and it will not be there, that’s the nature of things.

Everything is a potential problem until it happens and becomes a real problem.:( Where I put it is extremely convenient, but out of the way. Who knows what the "potential for problems" really is, but I can't see how it is any greater than being attached to a mask strap. Give it a try.

The fact is that a lot of instructors dive differently than they teach. When we teach, we are required to do so within the guidelines of the Standards and Procedures of the agency we teach for. When we dive outside of teaching, we can follow protocols that developed through our experiences ... like everyone else.

Why do we need to agree? I don't really see this as a right or wrong issue ...
