Does anyone know if they rent tanks at White Star? And what time to they start doing refills? I have to be out of town all weekend and am trying to decide if I should rent tanks on Friday, or if I can rent them there Sunday. Or I may just go buy my first tank. I'd rather rent if I can.

Thanks,

Andy

I would rent at least 2 tanks from the LDS if I were you. Catching up with the folks that run the compressor is kind of hit-and-miss this time of year. Tank rental is $9 from my LDS, vs. $7 for a refill at the quarry. That's only $2 extra for the reassurance that you will get to dive more than once. I can tell you from experience that it's no fun driving all the way down there, paying admission, and then being unable to get a refill. After Memorial Day they'll probably be there most of the time on weekends so you could get away with bringing 1 tank then but not now.

They do have the phone number posted on the shelter. Usually when the crowd is small, like now, before all the LDS's really start doing open water certs, the people with air fills (also run concession stand) will just go home. They live within a mile of the quarry and will gladly show up to fill a single tank if you call. They have a large bank on site and don't need to bring the compressor. Good idea to rent the tanks anyway. The fills at Whitestar tend to be "hot" and while I'm not suggesting that this is acceptable with a rental tank, the shop tanks have likely already been subjected to this abuse.
