Hi,

I'm going on a cruise in April that will stop at Cosumel for a day. I'd like to go snorkelling to some shallow reefs via a boat, something like this:

"3 reef snorkelling" (Cozumel Tours by Johann & Sandra)
Glass Bottom Boat Cozumel Snorkeling Tour

but I can't find any information on them, if that's a reputable tour operator. Do you have any recommendations from your experiences?

thanks,

Jason

I guess this may not be the best place to post this question. which forum should I post it to?

thanks,

Jason

You asked in the right forum. I think the problem may be that many of us are divers and may not have ever taken a snorkeling tour in Cozumel. I've seen a gazillion snorkeling/glass bottom boats there and can't remember a single name of an operation. If no one here has an answer, I know the ship's concierge can arrange a boat snorkeling tour. I can tell you that there are 2 main types of boats/tours. The smaller glass/non-glass bottom boats and the larger catamaran type boats. The catamarans are usually big party boats that include a lot of alcohol and throw-in some snorkeling. The smaller boats are 6-8 ppl and just head-out to the reefs.

Some of the larger ops that cater to the cruise ship crowd are all about quantity. Perhaps you might consider checking on some smaller dive ops in cozumel. The threads here mention quite a few that offer snorkling just like they offer diving. I can recommend Alex with sunrise divers. they re a small op so catering to special needs like the schedule of a cruise ship. .: SUNRISE DIVERS :.

BTW, a discover scuba course might be just the thing to find out about the fun envolved in our underwater hobbie. Its how i became "hooked". Its funny, I hate to go fishing now. I am more aware of The animals than ever before.

Seafan-----in your shoes, I would just head down to Playa Palancar and go on their boat.......it heads to Colombia Shallows and Palancar Gardens which are two of the best reefs for snorkeling. There is no schedule-----they go out when there are enough people and I've seen them go out with just two........no frills, no food, no drinks, but you are welcome to bring anything you want on board........it's also quite a nice beach area with restaurant while you are waiting.........I'd do that WAY before I would pay for a cruise ship sponsored booze fest.......price at Palancar is $30-35 per person...........have fun..........Betsy

I second the suggestion to try a discover scuba course. It will be orders of magnitude more memorable than a snorkel trip. It's amazing how easy and quickly they get you into that gear and under the water very safely.
My wife had every intention of only going snorkeling in Honduras, but after 5 minutes on the surface watching the divers and everything else below, all she wanted to do was to get down there and fly through the water with us.

While the booze cruise boats aren't really my speed either, I have to admit the people on them do like they're having fun. A few weeks ago we had just popped-up from Cedral Wall. We were back on the boat about to head back to the docks when the boat captain pointed and said "look!" We did, and there was of the Fury catamarans (wait, is Fury the name of the boat, or the operation?) went by. . . With a boat load of nudists waving at us.
