I am still fairly new to diving and have never used a computer before. I am looking to buy one very soon and am in need of input for which one would be good(wrist type). I want to buy one that works for all diving i.e. nitrox, tec. since I plan on doing them eventually. I don't want to buy one now and then have to upgrade later for other uses. I am thinking about getting a uwatec smart pro or smart tec, would that be good enough for me or is there something better fitted for me :06: Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

i recently purchased an aeris atmos AI, its a bit on the expensive side but i am very happy with it so far

Check out the Suunto Viper. The Suunto website has the specs...

After a lot of shopping and comparing, I purchased the Scuba Pro/ Uwatec Aladin Prime 3. The computer program is easy to use. The Console mounted computer is easy to download using a cheap IR interface device. The Computer is easy to learn, has audio and visual prompts as well as an easy to read display. I like the one button safety stop timer. And being Scuba Pro, it is available worldwide. User replaceable batteries, a real plus.

Hi deep1,

You don’t “need” a computer for tec diving (some would argue that you don’t need one for any kind of diving—that’s for another thread) as you’ll likely be cutting your table(s)/planning your dive with a program on your laptop. The dive computer (if used at all) will be used as a backup only. All you really need for technical diving is a bottom timer-type device (or an inexpensive dive computer in gauge mode).

IMHO, getting a true “tec” dive computer (i.e. Trimix, multiple-gas switching capability, even rebreather interface in some cases—VR3, HS Explorer, NiTek He, EMC-20 etc.) because you plan to do technical diving “eventually” would be a huge waste of money that can be better spent on “essential dive equipment;” a good reg, for instance. OTOH, some of the “tec” computers, such as the Delta P VR3 and Cochran EMC-20 can be progressively upgraded from basic (air only) as your training progresses but I personally would not recommend that option.

If you really want to invest in a dive computer, a simple (one mix) nitrox capable computer with gauge mode should serve you present recreational and future diving needs. I see from your profile that you are located in Texas. Larry at ScubaToys (also in Texas), who is a member of this board, will be more than willing to give his expert advice and help you pick a computer. PM or call him.

I would stay away from the idea of getting a "tech" computer because you may eventually want to do technical diving. They are very expensive and most of them would be a huge overkill for the typical recreational diving. A computer that is one step in the "tech" direction is the Dive Rite Nitek Duo. I recently purchased one and am very satisfied. The reason it is a little more technical is that you can program two types of nitrox mixes into the computer for your dive. It is also very user friendly and has a nice large display.

I vote for Suunto Vyper!
If you dive recreational but in future you want do tec. I think it's the best for you.
Air, Nitrox, Gauge (can be used like bottomtimer - techdiver). Big display, with big numbers + backlight! Think one o te best out there (hovever haven't experiences with other manufacturer). The full spec. is on the website www.suunto.com

I also recommend the Nitek Duo (also sold as Apeks Quantum, Tusa IQ and a few other names). Simple to use and works great for Nitrox and allows a second gas for advanced Nitrox diving.

An added plus is that it works as a pretty good bottom timer if you do venture further into tech.

Hello all! I'm new to this board.

I'd have to say I like the Atmos AI. I have three dive computers two of them at Atmos. The computer is very user friendly and works well. It'll make you lazy it does everything for you except swim and breath. I bought one of them new from a local dive shop, I think it cost me around $700 two or three years ago, then I picked another one up (for the wife) on Ebay for less then $400. The one I found on Ebay was brand new and a great deal. I check Ebay out before for a slightly used one before I paid retail.

I had another brand computer before my Atmos, it was somewhat finicky, and not as user friendly. It makes a huge difference. ;)
