Recreational Sea Shell Collecting

Doesn't seem too promising. You might try calling down to some dive shops, or stopping at the tourist centers (lots of discount books, free) to see if there are some commercial takers who would sell you the shells.

Nothing moves faster for a new shell, either. I've only seen it once though.

Many years ago, living by the water in Guam we had a regular visitor: a hermit crab that used a small baby food jar for a shell. A good display of crab physiology.
