Any suggestions on where the best locals are to dive with our dolphin friends? Looking at Roatan but am sure there are other places that offer this kind of experience. I've always had a special affinity to dolphin's and my favorite movie is "The Deep Blue" that I highly recommend to anyone that loves these creatures.
Ciao,
Phil

Difficult to beat Anthonys Key on Roatan as that encounter is in the open water.

We had another accidental encounter off Maui last year as many mommies and babies circled us for the entire dive but that's the first time we ever had that happen. If you want to be certain to see them in open water, try Anthonys Key.

Roatan does offer AKR's Dolphin Program- this comes in two flavors...

Less expensive is the Snorkel where you actually get to fondle the critters, pix of them in your arms, etc. They do some Dolphin show tricks with and for you.

The dive- more expensive, way less contact, certainly no touching. Buy the video.

Very busy with cruise ship people. Always a way for any resort on Roatan to book you in for a visit. You will do this for 1/2 day at the max.

Or, on Roatan, dive the S Side near "Iron Shore" (E of CCV, near Parrot Tree Resort) and flop off of your dive boat to snorkel with them. Not guaranteed but a natural encounter is better than any ten Come Pester Flipper shows.

Liveaboard to the Little Bahama Bank for the wild ones. Grand Bahama (Unesco) or Roatan for the guarenteed interaction. There is also a dolphin program now in Palau. The experience is very similiar to Unesco.

I was on a liveaboard in Belize and we were fortunate enough to run into a pod of dolphins. They played around us for about 5 minutes, this was off of Blackbird caye. I'll attach a few pics below it was really amazing:D

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I can't wait for my first encounter with them. Happy scubering...

I was in oahu boat diving two years ago, and had just gotten back into the boat and my bcd off when they spotted a pod of them headed right for us. I threw my mask and snokel back on and snorkeled along with them for about a quarter mile. I was no further away than a foot from some of them at different times, I finally got worn out and had to turn back to the boat before I got to far away. It was an Awesome chance encounter, I guess luck at being in the right place at the right time.:D
