A great place to go diving in the winter time in the midwest (if you don't mind cold water) is Philips Quarry in Muncie, IN. They're open year round and have ice on the lake only about 4 weeks out of the year, at worst. I was there diving Feb 27th and 28th, 2012. Visibility was 15ft at worst and 35ft+ in most places; water temp. 38F throughout. Lots of stuff to see on the bottom. 50ft depth throughout most of the quarry.
I was about to go to mermet springs which is 6 hours from Chicago when I found this place on google, it's 4 hours from Chicago.
The local dive shop owns the quarry. They were very friendly and helpful.
This is going to be my winter diving destination, besides Gilboa, next year as well.
