the apeks kits are only 38 dollars, so deep 6 really isn't that much cheaper in the grand scheme of things, just getting them is a lot harder. the real exception would be the older sp and usd regs you can get trident seats for and put together a first stage kit for a lot less.

Car parts for every car manufactured are available from the same OEM who manufactured parts for the "Branded" car. For instance, I bought an OEM Volvo timing belt for about half the price of the same "official volvo part." Volvo is large enough not to be able to get away with the under-the-radar-ScubaPro -scheme.

but if you got the volvo part from volvo, it would be the same scenario with scuba. There is large enough of an aftermarket that the parts suppliers are not going to shoot themselves in the foot. With scuba gear it's very different and the manufacturers are making their own stuff. For instance, Dive Rite does actually punch out all of the diaphragms for their regulators in Florida and send them to their OEM to put in their regs and service kits.

The difference with the car manufacturers is someone like Gates, Moog, etc who produce parts for the manufacturers have enough of a market to set up their own distribution channels and sell parts. Note that you can't get things like body panels or anything else very specific to the vehicles from anyone but dealers. With scuba gear, everyone is making most of their own things so you have to go through the dealer. The exception is O-rings which can be sourced easily if you know what the sizes are and you can in fact make your own seats if you buy the sheet of the right material and the right punch to knock them out IF that is how that regulator is built. Trying to DIY something like the Apeks HP seat would be impactical due to the machining work required to taper the seat and get it on the stem
