Like some have said do the course when you are "happy" with the basics and bad habits haven't developed. If I could have done it at 50 dives instead of 650 I think I might have had an easier time.

I'll repeat this advice. I did mine last weekend at just over 100 dives, about 60 of those in doubles. I was far enough along that I didn't terribly struggle with things, but still was able to progress immensely in the class. I also was still "new" enough that I didn't put too much pressure on myself, and I hadn't formed too many bad habits that needed to be unlearned.
