So, time between pushes can be forever?

How many caves have had only one person/team map the entire cave themselves?

Maybe, I should restate my question a little. When you stop extending the line, but there is still cave to go. How long do you get until it's no longer a project? Do you will it to another diver when you die or become a laggered old fart non-diver?

Why don't you just talk to whomever laid the existing line? Discuss your goals and whether you are "stealing" something they have been poised and setup for but are waiting for some reason for better conditions or the stars to align? I think you are thinking there's alot more conflict than reality here...

Nope, it's a known issue. I don't understand why they get so "butthurt". I've seen the outburst and it's not pretty. It seems other divers agree they should yield. I would love to participate in a "team" effort to push the line, but not necessarily do it myself, at least not at this time. Yes, I said participate in a team dive. The requestors are perfectly capable, but not in the eyes of the squatters.

So you're just basically trolling?

More like protecting the innocent(me) from a decision by another group I don't understand. I am told there are rules of etiquette that I must obey in caves. I heard two different stories want to figure out who's making their own rules.

I would never tag a lead that belonged to a friend without asking permission first. If it's a stranger boasting about it in public, or if I find it without being told, it's fair game.

Most people who are laying a significant amount of line know about multiple leads anyways, so simply helping them on a few dives would result in getting more leads than the one you might steal.

I think I know where you are talking about and this isn't going to be resolved on SB.

Where?

I think all these "rules" are silly. I hate boat diving now, because it's all tuned to the lowest common denominator with this rule or that rule.

So, I can tie off anywhere along the line and go explore, but if I tie off at the end I'm breaking some unspoken rule????

Yeah courtesy, you know the golden rule?

So, if you take conditions and permits out of the equation. Am I hearing squatters rights here? A team incapable or unwilling can claim public property???

If you have a certain project in mind, quit pussyfooting around and tell us what you're talking about - it'll definately help you get your answer.
