I am pretty new to scuba board and to the sport itself, and just been seeing a lot of posts making fun of DIR, just wondering what it is.

It is the ethics of diving - DIVE IT RIGHT. A sort of minimalistic existentialistic group of people!! ;) I am learning about it and will one day dive that way but there are loads of threads on this board already which explains what it is...

DIR explained

Happy reading!!!

Either "uncontrolled condescending arrogance and an attitude problem combined with the removal of free will and thinking" or "the only way to dive".

The "one shoe fits all" of the diving world.

Do a search on the board and decide for yourself - there are more than enough threads on it :)

DIR has a lot to offer, some find it to restrictive, some swear buy it :06: Since joining the board I've learned alot from this group and now use a few of their practices myself. However I'am very much "on the fence" as to its value for the type of diving I do, however this may well change.

The DIR website i.e. GUE is here

http://www.gue.com/

hope this helps

PS most, but not all, of the people I respect on this board are DIR. ;)

I think it's a Dive Cult...Some sort of ritualistic initiation one must go through in order to be a member...................I think it's called " Methodical Cranial Calcification Method" or something like that.... I read a book on it.

As you can now see there are various attitudes toward DIR. Take what you can of it and enjoy diving.

DIR comes from cave diving and historically I believe it comes mostly from the Wakulla Plains Project(WKPP) in Florida. It is mostly a philosophy of careful planning, developement of skills to a high standard, and stanadardization of gear and gas mixes to optimize safety during the kind of dives these people(WKPP) do as part of the research and exploration of the cave system.

What has happened is their techniques have now come out of the caves and are being used by small but ever growing group of recreational divers. As noted by one of the other respondents, some people swear by it, some people swear at it and some people are on the fence about.

IMHO many people on both sides of the fence really don't know what its all about, which is why you get some of the poorly thought out responses you see in this thread and many others.

The skills part of DIR will actually help you become a better diver. The gas mixes part of DIR for plain old everyday run of the recreational diving isn't really necessary but it won't kill you if you follow their recommendations. Dive planning to the full extent of DIR is a little more than needed IMHO for most recreational diving BUT understanding their planning methods and philosophy and applying them can help reduce potential problems during any dive. Dive planning and gas management are woefully lacking in the general dive industry at this point in time.

Mr. Mares and Optik are spot on with their thoughts on taking from it what you will and enjoying your diving.
