What's ScubaBoard worth to you?

Occasionally I see people saying that ScubaBoard is just an Internet site and as such not really very important in the real world....you know.....the one full of all the stuff we aren't allowed to talk about here!

So I thought I'd do a Poll. It's simple......on a scale of 1 to 10 in real world value how important do you consider this board to be for you? I suppose that is sort of like asking how valuable your hobbies and freetime are, and then SB to them! (hmmmm....have I expressed that right? )

Anyway...here goes.... oh...by the way.....1 is no value and 10 is lots!

I hate 10 point scales. I can deal with 3 or 5 point scales but 10 points leaves me trying to transpose my thinking onto something that feels alien.

That said:

What exceeds expectations:
The people, the knowledge and the sense of community

What meets expectations:
The technology and the ease of use

What fails to meet expectations:
The occasional inability to see the world without borders.

Good point from a lot of posters here. I'm not defining this poll the way Walter did. I'm looking at it as a recreational only rating. I rated it a 7. There are a few things I'd rather be doing than sitting here typing - one is diving! But SB has provided me with a lot of information from a lot of great people. It's also helped me build my student base. A majority of my students find me through the Board. I have to agree with Bob (Grateful Diver). There are a few people that I no longer see post here that were excellent contributors. I miss reading their posts. At least Bob still gets to talk and dive with some of them.

As long as I don't have to see a world without *ScubaBoarders*...

As for the other borders, I thought I had perspective before, but with my significant buddy teaching English in Japan (and living 7252.3 miles from me), I find that I have even more enhanced perspective. (Hey, Kim, if you're listening, there wouldn't be anywhere around Fukuoka that would be diveable right around Christmas and New Year's, eh? )

I'm not trying to be be provocative or a troll or anything - I'd just like to hear your thoughts on this convienent phrase.

I sure couldn’t have skipped my wet class and it wasn’t bad or anything. But my answer to the question ‘how did I learn to dive’ is ScubaBoard. If nothing else the diverse viewpoints provide me direction for questions and consideration.

We in the diving community should consider ourselves a "family" of sorts. We are forced to learn from the mistakes of our brothers and sisters with our parents (leaders, pros, and high experienced divers) letting us know what to expect and how to resolve conflicts within the family.

I'm going to give manufacturers a bad rap for a second, but trust me I mean well by the wording. The manufacturers are those wheel-and-deal family members looking to make a buck or two, but are willing to give that back to us 100 fold in the form of new technologies.

So to the family I say: Thanks so much for the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences with you and for providing me the opportunity to learn from so many who are still so far away, yet so close through ScubaBoard.

Without reading all the responses, I don't think the word "valuable" is appropriate to my visits. There is great information here, no doubt about it.

But I spend time here for entertainment reasons. It's sort of like a reality show to me. I like to observe different points of view and what sets folks off, etc. Once in awhile, I can comment.

I visit SB on a regular base, almost every nite.

Since I am new at diving, I rarely give advises unless I exactly know what I am talking about ....

I have asked questions and inputs and was very satisfied with the answers .

Sometime when I read your replies, I cannot stop laughing ... you guys are a riot !!!

As for the rating, to me 10 = perfect !!!! and perfection is not of this world .... so I give it an 9...

I use the board when I am at work.
I try to answer peoples questions and give opinions when I feel that I known what I am talking about mostly about diving in Malaysia and Thailand but will also give opinions on my own equipment, I have also found quite a bit of advise that has helped me.
I do find however there are alot of users that are quick to jump on someone and chastise them if they feel they have given bad advise, you might even say there are a number of bullys that use the forum (in fact I would definatly say that).
