I think the OP was implying about being valuable in your life of SCUBA. Personally i gave it a 10 because as a newbie, it is interesting to read and learn. I try to read all topics even if it doesn't concern me because it's nice to have read it if you know what i mean.

Yes, the board would be replaced if it finished but the point is, it being here is a self education in it's own right if you have the interest and time to see whats being discussed - even if you don't agree with some.

Um, considering the scale was defined in the initial post as 1 being "no value" and 10 being "lots", I gave it a 10. Now, if it had defined the scale as 10 being "most important thing in my life", it would certainly *NOT* have rated a 10, but "lots"? Yeah, I can give it a "lots" quite easily.

(Hmm... I guess that would make my significant buddy, J., something like... um... I guess something like aleph-null.)

I gave it a 10. SB is what made me finally go out and get certified (maybe wasnt a good idea after all since im so addicted now :smilie_ho ).

But i can definatly say that if it wasnt for SB I would be sitting here for about the 10th year now, thinking how cool it would be to learn how to scuba dive!

I enjoy having the place to exchenge opinions in a semi-free manner that is safe for work and children. But I do value the opinion of my diving friends who hang out at the local dive shop.

I love it. It's a 10 for me

For me ... at this point in time ... it's a 5.

ScubaBoard is, I think, a valuable resource of information and social contacts ... I've found a lot of friends through the board. But over time I've become less involved in the board ... I limit myself to reading only about a half-dozen or so forums. Many of the friends I've made ... some who I consider my best diving friends ... rarely visit the board anymore, and almost never participate. The place just doesn't seem the same without them here.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing ... it opens up bandwidth for newer divers and participants. But I can't help noticing that I'm skipping over many of the same topics and conversations that I used to be passionate about.

Guess what I'm trying to say is I just don't feel as "connected" with the community as I once did ... it's still a part of my daily existance, but not to the degree that it used to be.

Its a solid 3.

I've met some great people, learned lots of stuff, sold some gear, etc.

SB is an enabler. Its nothing more. The Scuba community is vast, with plenty of watering holes. If it didn't happen here, it would have happened someplace else. I just read Walter's post. Excellent. There is nothing that separated SB from the hundreds of other Scuba Boards out there except the influx of newbies. By its sheer mass, SB has a gravational pull. Sadly, its quantity, not quality that distinguishes SB from the rest. We have become the Neptune of Scuba BBS's... huge but mostly hostile to intellegent life.

Its the law of diminishing returns. After 4+ years here, its the rare day that something transcendent is posted, learned or shared. Its just not that interesting to me anymore, and my participation and impact are at all time lows. I don't use SB to stay in touch with the people I've met here. I, you know, actually talk with them see them and most often (gasp) dive with them.

I've tried to mix things up, get something going to keep me engaged, but its just not happening. That's not to say I don't like it here. I like it here plenty, but SB isn't life.

So in the scheme of my very fulfilling, exciting, active, blessed, wonderful life - the question being what is SB worth to me?

Its a solid 3.

Today.

Let's see, I spend about two hours a day on ScubaBoard when I'm in town. Since I charge $75 per hour (to any clients crazy enough to pay it even though plumbers here are $90/hr), that's $150 per day times 365 days/year....

wow, that's nearly $55,000... pretty darned valuable! I guess I should start charging SB for my time! Oh, that isn't what you meant, is it?

After two and a half years here, I don't see many things I haven't seen discussed before about scuba. (but the DIR vs everyone threads are still always fun) But living where I live, it's about the only contact I have with other divers....believe it or not. I don't hang around any dive shops because the only ones are 15 miles out on the reef and I dive off my own boat. I dive alone most of the time. I'll give it a 7.
