(the poll really doesn't say 1 being lowest or 10 being highest")
Ummmm it does actually.....(if anyone actually reads ALL the first post in the thread...)

There's one in every crowd though.....:eyebrow:

Definitely worth a high rating and definitely worth supporting!

I have learned so much in the past few weeks - I can't tell you. As a PP mentioned, a magazine article can give you some info, but it won't always go into great debate and discussion...usually just one side or perspective.

I have gotten travel info, gear info, diving tips, maintenance hints, etc... As soon as I can manage it, I'm hoping to crash a get-together so I can meet folks in person. I'd love to find some dive folks around here. I'm still working my way around the site, so I'm finding new things every day...

I was having a PBS moment there when I saw the poll title.....

When starting out I can honestly say that this was my sinkle biggest source of information especially the diverse aspects of the many things about this sport. As I gain experience reading and posting forces me to reflect on the subtleties of thngs as they relate to individual threads.

Well, to me a 10 would be things that really matter - life and death issues - family - friends - food - shelter. I like Scubaboard, but it's simply not on that scale. Even diving isn't a 10. If Scubaboard were to disappear, it would soon be replaced with something else. I'd hate to lose Scubaboard, but you folks aren't being realistic.

SB is nice to look around and get some views, have some banter and try to help other divers. But I do not see it as an Oracle. There are many truths here, but also many un-truths, ego's and plain jokers. So overall it is fun to have, but do not take everything here as thruth. Most threads end up with 'my... is better than yours' (fill in: equipment, methods, backrounds, analysis, style, colours etc, etc).

Walter, you're absolutely right, if the scale of "valuable" is going to include basic things like housing, food, a job . . . But on the scale of very elective things having to do with my fun, Scubaboard rates.

I read TONS of stuff on this board when I started diving. I got a whole slew of valuable ideas and tips, and I learned tons about diving in so many areas, from decompression theory to surf entry techniques. I read about gear (still do). I've made use of the board to ask about destinations where we were headed. And I found out about DIR here.

But the incalculable value of Scubaboard lies in the people it has brought to me. Everybody knows I met Bob here, and Bob's probably the reason I'm still diving. Scubaboard brought dsteding to Bob, and Doug's become a friend and a dear dive buddy. I just spent a weekend diving with Cali68, Ben_ca, KMD and others in Monterey, and spent three days getting to know HBDiveGirl for real. And I have made good "cyberfriends" of PerroneFord, Diver0001, and Thalassamania, among others.

The internet is an amazing resource, and places like Scubaboard allow networking among far-flung people to a degree that was just never possible before. And that can have enormous value.

I gave it a 10. I've learned so much about so many things, and have the opportunity to hear the opinions of people who are so much more experienced and knowledgable. I check it all day long!
Thanks to everyone here :D

 Thanks for posting this. I was trying to think of an intelligent response, but my mind isn't functioning yet today... I don't think anybody is trying to say that SB should rank above the 'absolutes'...'the non-negotiables'....at least I'm not. ;)
