the things you are supposed to check before you dive in the water?

My first dive in the ocean, I was kind of surprised how chaotic a dive boat can be in 5 foot swells as six or seven divers scramble to get ready.

I go head to toe.

Head: Mask, (snorkel and hood if you use one), wetsuit zipped (if using one) reg, BC slightly inflated, check gauges, (and while you're at it, check gloves if you are using them), octopus, computer, etc. clipped/secured, booties, fins.

Edited to add: Check your buddy out and have your buddy check you out.
(Another edit: Breathe on the reg a few times to be sure you're getting air before you hit the drink.)

This is my system. Although it's lengthy to type out, it's quick to do.

Air, air, air, and air. Air turned on, low pressure inflator connected, adequate air pressure, air from regulators on demand. You ain't going far without the rest of the stuff and if your air works you are ok. Eventually everyone jumps in without something, just don't let it be air. Check buddy also.

BCD -- got it on?
Weights -- got 'em in? Know where your buddie's quick releases are?
Releases -- all closed?
Air -- got in on? Check BC inflator, octo, primary? (watch your SPG when breathing the reg, to make sure it doesn't dip)
Final OK -- thumbs up, both you and your buddy?

Hmm, hmm, need a catchy phrase to remember BWRAF...
Big Whales Really Are Fun!
:D

BSAC....(British Sub-Aqua Club)
Buoy....(BC inflated and inflatable)
Sink.....(weights in place)
Air.......(turned on & test reg while watching SPG)
Clips....(no danglies)

My first dive in the ocean, I was kind of surprised how chaotic a dive boat can be in 5 foot swells as six or seven divers scramble to get ready.

I've memorized a list of various items (Mask, Fins, Drysuit zipped, etc.), but the one that I ALWAYS DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK IS AIR.

Everything else is secondary and may be annoying or embarassing, but the big one is air. People have died by jumping in negative only to find they have no air and can't turn it on in time.

The absolute last thing I do before an entry and after everybody is away from my gear is to put the reg in my mouth, the gauge (computer actually) in my hand and dump enough air into my BC that I feel it start to squeeze, while watching the gauge and breathing. I should get a couple of pound drop.

This tells me the:
  • Air is on (because I just used a bunch of it)
  • The reg works, because I'm breathing,
  • The BC holds air (because I feel the squeeze)
  • The tank valve is open all the way (because the pressure only dropped a couple of pounds while inflating the BC and breathing)
If there's no pressure drop, the gauge is probably broken, and if there's a big drop the's a problem with the tank valve (probably not fully open).

You can always write a predive checklist on your slate ... of course you need to remember to bring it ;-)

everyone has there own methood.
in time you will to
i have a specific order i gear up, and its gotton so routine..
then i give myself a once over.. then ask somone just to look quick.....
at 20 feet down the line. (if im with somone) we do a bubble check)
and away i go

I came up with this mnemonic to remember the essentials: My Friends Are Way Cool

Mask

Fins

Air/Air/Air
(Reach back and check valve ,
test breathe main reg while watching SPG for fluctuation, and check pressure;
test breathe octo; press and release BCD inflator while listening for the "whoosh"
and making sure the button operates smoothly)

Weights

Computer -- On; set to the right mix, review NDLs vs dive plan
