I'm a Fish!
Hi peeps, quick question:

I got a HP120 for nothing and it is 2 years overdue for a hydro, which I would be happy to pay for. I also need to replace the valve so here are my questions:

The tank is rated to 3500psi.

Can I use one of those pro-valve that can convert between yoke and DIN? Or is this strictly a DIN rig if I fill to actual service pressure? I have both regs and will mainly use DIN, but wants to know if I can convert to a yoke in the event my friends/buddies need to use it.

Thanks.

What is the neck size? Brand of tanks? Year manufactured?

Convertible valves are nice to have and are readily available for 3/4" necks. You can check ebay for the 7/8" availability.

3500 PSI is the quasi official cut-off for DIN so yoke is not permitted. Don't ask me where this is regulated but it is the standard. The convertible PRO valves are found on 3442 PSI cylinders.

Secondly, there is a very good chance that it was produced by PST with a 7/8" fine thread. Aside from some rogue bootlegs only DIN valves were made to fit. Even if you find one of these valves saying you will only fill it to 3442 will not fly.

Since it is a deep body 7 thread valve don't even think about sticking a conversion plug in there. The body just wasn't proportioned to work that way.

Take a photo of the tank, and we'll help you ID it.
Share with us all of the markings on the tank.
I have the same sneaking suspicion that spectrum does -- that the tank is a PST with a 7/8 UNF tank valve.
The 7/8 UNF tank valves are deep 7-thread DIN valves that will only work with a DIN-configured reg. The yoke insert that works in the Thermo Pro Convertible DIN/K valves (5-thread) won't work in the 7-thread DIN valves.

Does the tank valve have "Sherwood 6300" or "U.S. Divers Aqua-Lung" markings on it?

Here's the marking on the tank:

DOT-E971-3500 TP5250
IA 664710R
81

There is also a manufacturer sticker that says something like "PST will not warranty this cylinder for hydro failure unless the procedure was bla bla bla as highlighted in the PST Bulletin"

So looks like a PST tank as spectrum says. So will the XS Scuba 7/8" - 14 UNF inlet (VX378R) work on this tank?

Yes, the XS Scuba 7/8" UNF valve will work. Also heed the notice about hydro. The hydro shop should do a round out before the actual hydro. The round out takes the cylinder to 90% of it hydrostatic test pressure, releases it, and then does the actual hydro. Someone around the board has the actual notice and will hopefully post it up for ya. Take a copy of it with you to the hydro shop.
