I second the Mares and have two. Cheap, 100% out of the box, and I'm alive to type this :)

My thought is to use the same type of regs as you use for your back gas. If you have a pile of them in your dive bag and you need a spare part you know that what you are using is compatible.

Ideally you will have an 02 cleaned reg, but if you don't just remember to turn your deco tank on very SLOWLY. This is what was done in the olden days before 02 cleaning as detailed to me by a reg designer off the record.

I would suggest a sea cure mouthpiece as comfort is a lot more important when you don't have anything to look at during a long hang. It can also help if you tend to cat nap and need the mouthpiece to stay put.

For the record I use a zeagle envoy.

I would use one of the following:

1. Poseidon Xstream Deco (white cover/purge)

2. Poseidon Xstream Duration (green purge)

3. Atomic M1 with heat sink

...One thing I am thinking about is that I will be in the north atlantic most of the time so I want to make sure it will preform well in colder waters, what temps are you guys using the dive rite deco regs in?

I dive the DiveRite RG3000 here in NJ on stage and deco bottles year round. Never had a problem in water down to 38F.
