I'm going diving in the ocean for the first time on Friday and I'm so excited!! I just want to know what to expect. How much different is it than fresh water?
GlowWorm... I dive just above you off the coast of North Carolina. We recently did a wreck dive (the Hyde) which is a good introduction dive out of Wilmington NC. This was my wife's second experience diving off the NC/SC coast and her first time did not go so well. I have been pushing for her to try again and since it was with our club, she accepted.
Following the dive, I asked her to write up her impressions as a first time diver off NC. So you know, she is an 80/80 diver and prefers the Caribbean and has @ 200 or so dives...
If you would like to get her impressions, here is the link "Posted by T. Phelan, August 7, 2012" and you will find it about half way down the page...
I suspect your going to the Sherman or Barracuda Alley... If so, both are pretty easy dives but the seas can get bad in a hurry and can be tricky getting back on the boat with all of your teeth. Just be careful and know how to get back on safely.
We are heading out this weekend as well... A little spearfishing and its looks to be a good weekend to be diving off the coast!!!
Best to you, lee

I bought a safety sausage upon my return home, one dive we got swept down current, popped up in a rain storm in 4-5 ft seas 100-150 yrds from the boat! People were puking everywhere it was awesome!
Mike
Mike, not to be an a$$ but never dive the coast without a safety sausage... Ever!!! The charter should never let anyone dive without one... Seas kick up (and they do), boats break lose (and they do), and all hell breaks lose (and it will)! Been there, done that!
This is not so much directed at you but more for anyone who may follow this thread...
Awesome is not a word I would use to describe it... Dangerous, yes but then again, your probably young! In case you were unaware, we have had more than our fair share of diving related deaths off North and South Carolina in recent years...!
With all due respect, lee
