I'm using a Mares Abyss and used to have a Dacor Extreme and used it until it died. Loved the Dacor and love the Mares. Ditto the earlier sender on the short exhaust sometimes causing the bubbles to interfere with viz.

Hi Otter-Cat,
After reading the reg board I noticed many guys suggesting women would prefer smaller second stages just cuz we are women. Don't get me wrong, they often prefer the smaller 2nd's as well; but, this made me curious enough to ask directly. Based on this, and taken to the extreme, we might all be diving the Micra, and clearly this isn't so.
This will be my first reg purchase. My decision is coming down to either the Apeks ATX200, or the TX100. Since the biggest difference is the 2nd stage and since I saw no pertinant discussions here, it seemed a worthwhile thread to start. I wanted to see if there were any real trends in reg choice, and if our likes/dislikes mirrored the guys. That's all, no more to it than that!
So I guess my decision comes down to bubble interference and how much I want to avoid it. I love the photography end of things and the larger T of the TX100 seems like a potential benefit. I know many woman dive this reg and love it (according to their significant others), but given the chance to "upgrade" to the ATX would they??? Hmm, that is the question... Thanks, as always, everyone's input helps! Rhonda

Hi Rhonda,

I can't really say how big the difference in bubble interference is between the Apeks TX 100 and ATX 200, since I have only used the ATX 200. I haven't had much difficulty with bubble interference with the ATX 200.

One thing that's nice about a smaller 2nd stage is that there is less drag, so your jaws don't get as tired. I think that's a lot of the appeal of the micra as well.

Both the TX 100 and the ATX 200 are high quality regulators. You might want to post a thread in the regulator forum just asking for comparisons between those two if you don't get the information your interested in from responses to this thread.

Good luck buying your new reg -- it's so much fun to get new gear!

When it comes to a reg the size of the second stage is not paramount; performance is what counts.

In the end the person using the reg must be happy with how well it works for THEM. That's the truly relevant issue.

Size really doesn't matter.

Sherwood was making valves on locamotives over a hundred yrs. ago. They've been doing it long than anyone out there. Genesis and sherwood are my personal favorites.

I've read everything I can in the regulator forum, but I really want the womans' perspective. Thanx! I eagerly await the input, Ron

My wife recently "borrowed" my Apeks ATX200....Well I almost didnt get it back!!!

She had used an old reg of mine and several Aqua Lung rental regs. She was amazed at how well the ATX breathed and also like the fact that the second stage was smaller than what she had used in the past....and felt very comfortable with the second stage. We ended up purchasing a Aqua Lung Legend for her (which is very similar in design to the Apeks )and also breaths really smooth. As submariner mentions " performance is what counts" and I'm a firm believer in that ....theres lots of choices out there ..... this is just what we found to work for our needs.

Good Luck
Scott

My wife and I both dive with Oceanic regulators. I purchased the Oceanic Delta 3 and I got my wife the Gamma 2. Both regulators have been rated as strong performers by various publications.

As expected, both Oceanic regulators breathed very effortlessly. What surprised us was how comfortable they were. Both regulators were neutrally buoyant and had a comfortable mouthpiece, so even after 3 dives in a single day neither of us had sore jaws.

Thx...Doug

I dive a Viper TEC w/ Viper Octo and my wife dives a Sherwood Oasis w/Brut Octo.
She loves my Viper due to the lack of bubble interference and no jaw fatigue from a bouncing reg.

Apeks TX-50 primary on 7 foot hose and an ATX-40 bungeed backup.;)
