So I have this 'problem.' I'm too skinny and therefore my waist belt is very short, and I can't fit any pockets on it. I have a pouch to hold my wetnotes, but it's longer than the piece of webbing on either side unless I start removing D-rings (but I like my D-rings :|). I also have shears and a knife on the harness too, but they take up like no space.

So... I'm wondering if I'm the only one with this problem or if no one else really uses pockets on the waist anyways.

I have a couple of small XS Scuba weight pockets on my single tank rig. Wet notes, spare mask, SMB/spool either go in the pockets on my drysuit or the Highland shorts when I'm diving wet.

None.

When diving wet I use a DR thigh pocket and my drysuit has pockets attached.

one of the things I found "handy" was to put a D-ring on the loop formed by the webbing on the back side of the plate where it transitions from the shoulder to the waist strap. Makes for a clean attachment point, and takes up no real estate on your "belt". Using a bent ring makes it stand off a bit for access. This could free up space for a pocket.

NESS also has a ring that bolts to the holes in the plate, so you could do the same thing without the webbing involved. Lately, I'm really looking at these.....

Pockets on the thighs (shorts, on the suit, or something like the DR product) are a blessing.

How difficult is it to adjust and put on when you're on the boat? Are you just leaving the thigh pocket tightened and then looping it around the harness when you're gearing up?

I've considered getting pockets for my wetsuit, but I wanted to see if maybe I just messed up my harnessing or something.

rhwestfall: Do you ever have trouble reaching reaching that D-ring though? It seems like it would require quite a bit of flexibility to reach, and I'm not sure if I can do that in my wetsuit.

I am a wreck having had surgery on both shoulders, and also dive a dry suit with heavy undergarments. Yes, I can still reach the bottom edge of my plate....

One pocket tied directly to backplate for my spare mask, neoprene shorts with large pockets on thigh for backup slate, gloves, small equipment. Torch on harness under right shoulder d-ring. Knives on waist belt. Lift bags bungied to backplate. Wrist slates and computers where they belong.

I have one of these velcro thigh pockets

I use a webbing belt around my waist and put on the belt/pocket after wetsuit, before weight belt goes on. For drysuit it goes on before weight harness goes on.
