Dump the term.
Nah, don't need to do that... just accept my definition and all will be clear.
"A technical diver is a diver trained, equipped and who executes dives on which a direct ascent to the surface is constrained beyond a CESA by an actual or virtual overhead."
Piece of cake.

Excellent question! I refer to them as a trimix diver or a deco diver which actually identifies what they do. "Technical diver" identifies them as doing "something, but we aren't sure exactly what" differently from most divers. What do they do differently? Are they wreck divers? cave divers? rebreather divers? trimix divers? The term isn't helpful in descibing what they do. If you want to describe their diving, use terms that actually mean something. The other problem (a minor problem, IMO, since the term isn't helpful anyway) is there is no standard definition. (As far as I'm aware, diving doubles isn't part of anyone's definition. From decades of personal experience diving doubles, I can testify it's not a big deal. In many ways, twins are easier to dive than a single tank.) Different agencies have different definitions. Dump the term.

:god:
I guess you have a point.

The poll question is invalid - rec/tec dichotomy is false - a distinction without a difference.

it was changed since some people argued that they consider tec diving as a recreation (fun) so "/" means AND not OR

Im with you on that one. However, is a paid dive a technical dive?
My cert card says im doing advanced open water dives, whatever that means, cause it really aint that advanced what I do :p
Advanced means you've advanced beyond BOW, not that you're doing an advanced dive. ;)

Well, every time I try to say that people make a s***sandwich and im the spread :p

As I read thru all this I can't help thinking that in a sense all scuba diving is pretty technical. After all we were not built to survive in this environment, and we all have to depend on some pretty sophisticated technical equipment and training to breath underwater, and come back alive!

Hmmmm. Yes, I like it...:D

Ultimately recreational (I do it for the fun of it). Dive caves on rebreather with DPV and mix in the tank.

Looked at from the side of people who do Trimix/Cave/Wreck/Deco/(and possibly) rebreather, the label "technical diving" is probably too vague and not helpful.

But it probably serves a purpose from the other side though: ie. instructors teaching simple recreational diving who want a generic group label for "advanced diving that you should never do if you have only basic OW training".

I remember Gary Gentile writing in his book "Advaned Wreck Diving" (1st edition, circa 1989 or so) that although people said that deco was not part of recreational diving, he regularly decompressed while diving, and he was doing for it recreation, but he would let somebody else come with a new name for it. I guess somebody did. I note that more recently Gary has written a book entitled "Technical Diving" (or something like that), so I guess he is all signed up.
