This topic is semi of interest to me as im in the USA next year and will be diving and i suspect it'll be a divemaster on the boat type trip.
 
Sting, keep in mind that on many boats the DM is not paid so tips are his only means of compensation. Many DM's are not even DM's or divers. Many are just the crew member who is assigned to help divers, take fins at end of dive, maybe help with them at the beginning of the dive. Sometimes a boat is crowded and some assistance is nice even when you don't need it just to be more efficient and to get off the boat more quickly while the newer divers are taking their time. This is one case where I am generally pleased to tip if the DM made things run more smoothly.
