My wife says that too...

That doesn't make me your *****. :D

(damn the auto censor, that one would have been funny. You'll have to guess what I typed there.)

While I don't agree with SpareAir, I usually refrain from flaming on someone who does. But when he put in the comment about "and stage tank" it really made me scratch my head. I could see how gear configuations like this would drive someone into thinking the Hog setup is needed. But we don't all do this.

You may want to start a poll: Who uses/would never use/ a can of spare air for scuba diving??

That is in the running for the dumbest thing I've heard all week.

I can't imagine any use for a Spare Air while carrying a stage bottle! Carrying a stage implies either that you are already redundant with either doubles or an H-valve, or that your stage is breathe-able at depth.

But to answer the question: When I do wear my Spare Air, I mount it on my BC, back on the right hip, just behind my safety reel.

Go ahead and laugh, but I do find occasions where I consider the Spare Air appropriate, such as when diving an al-80 tank with a yoke valve at depths of greater than 30 feet. Gives me a little peace of mind.

Niggles. Rhymes with giggles.

How much air is in a can of spare air? 3 ft3? How long would that last at 30 ft? 90 seconds maybe?

I have seen D/Ms in the water with their spare air on class dives to 20 ft. It looks impressive to the students, but it does not really accomplish much else.

You cannot be serious about "greater than 30 ft"?

["Nicely" didn't work. Now attempting logic.]

Off Topic!!

Just curious, not looking to get flamed, although I am a little jealous of those that have gotten Pugged =-)

How many have actually filled and breathed (<- is that correct?) down a spare air? Or are most of the posts regarding the spare air just plugging in the numbers?

The reason I asked is that I bought one (have not actually been under water with it yet) for use when installing my docks. ( I need a minute or so under water to adjust the legs). I have a Pony for back-up.

Anyway, while garage diving :D last night I filled the unit a couple of times and breathed it down to empty. I have to tell you it took quite a while, a lot longer than I would have expected and although I did not count the breaths or time it, it was long enough to get bored with it. The first time I tried it I kept hitting the purge and checking the unit as it seemed like it was never going to run out.

I will be the first to admit that I know little about the math to figure out how long air lasts at depth but it seems to me that at 50' deep there would be enough air to do at "least" a controlled ascent and possibly if your not to paniced and you can control a very slow breathing rate you could get a bit of the 3 min. safety stop in also.

Of course this is all academic if like Uncle Pug it just plain doesn't work when needed.

Disclaimer: I only recently received my C-Card and openly admit I am an idiot.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"like Uncle Pug it just plain doesn't work when needed."

That's it - he doesn't work when he's needed.

LOL

I guess I am in for it now.

I meant to say, like Uncle Pugs Spare Air episode. I think!! :D
