Our idea was to take Mrs and and hit Catalina waters. I know i can just get on ferry., but what would we do once there? we thought 1-2 days trip.

nvermind found this:

Casino Point

sounds fun. anyone to join? July 29 to August 29 days are open.

It used to be that winter was the best time to dive out here... great visibility. However the exotic Asian Sargassum seaweed has really created less-than-ideal diving conditions at least in waters shallower than about 60-70 ft. It is an annual so it is gone by June and doesn't start growing back until October. That makes summer a good time (with warmer water too).

Drbill, i never dove catalina, what kind of temperatures we talking? i'll be diving trilam, thinking about 100 or 200G undies, i dive 250 in monterey summertime

Yesterday we had a surface temperature of 65-66, 63 at depth, with thermocline bringing it down to 57. This was out between bird rock and the reef. Overall was very comfortable in a 7mm, but that thermocline after an hour, brrrr...

Yes, let us know when you are dropping on down to visit us. Post in the So.Cal. forum and I'm sure that there will at least one of us diving in or around Catalina those days. By Aug. end the water temp below the thermocline will be up to low 60*s .... Wetsuit weather:D .... with the economy hitting the island hard you should be able to get some deals...just don't wait too long as summer is the peak season for Avalon. Oh and check out our "sticky" here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/socal/231885-updated-great-catalina-island-info-sticky-thread.html
Enjoy!

I dove Catalina, Avalon in March with rental wetsuit and had 60 degrees with 40 ft viz... Just spectacular, I paid for a DM to take me out and had a wonderful time...
