Heading down to Cozumel March 12 - 19th for a week of diving. Any recommendations on quality dive shops & dive locations?

Thanks,

There are many, many dive ops on Cozumel, and most are excellent because the competition is intense. What kind of experience are you looking for? Large boat or small? AL80's or larger steel? Lunch/snacks provided or no-frills? Gear custodial or not? Advanced sites or newbie-friendly? Early to the reefs or sleep in? There are lots of choices, and there is no one dive op that is best for everyone.

Cheers,

Dan it looks like we are going to be at CCV at the same time. Are you with a group?

master_diver_UJ It is their busy season in Coz I hope you can hook up with one of the dive ops mentioned a lot of the favorites are full this time of year.

Hey Everybody:

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I've emailed back and forth with a few dive shops down there who've already told me their at capacity. Keep the suggestions coming; can't wait to get in the water next week !

I have used Caballito del Caribe the last few times I've been to Cozumel. I've been very happy with them. They are a small operation, use 6-pack boats. Their DM's let you dive instead of herding you like a group of cattle, but if you're a newbie, they are there when you need them.

Thanks, Dan

I'm also a fan of Cabaillito's, we've been using them for 7-8 years.

Does Deep Blue store and rinse your gear day to day? Do they provide towels on the boats? Thanks.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned her yet, since she seems to be a board favorite, but we used Christi with Blue XT~Sea a few weeks ago and were very pleased. Her operation does a great job rinsing gear day to day and they have fluffy towels and dive parkas for your use on the boat. She also runs a very safe and efficient operation and both divemasters we used were outstanding.

If everyone else is full, she probably is too, but it's worth a shot. Even if she's full, she gaves us several recommendations for things while we were there and was spot on every time, so she can probably give you a good recommendation as to who might be good and have availability.

Christi was the first one I tried. She says she's booked eight weeks out...

Hi,
Here is my report about the dive-op. we used...Scubatony

Our two kids, 12 & 14, really took to scuba. We were all certified here at home in Ohio and so this was our first dive outside of the cold water of our local quarry. Our plan was for my son and i to dive poss. 3 or 4 days and my wife and my daughter to join us on three of the days. As it turned out, everyone liked the diving so much that my son an i did 6 2-tank dives plus a night dive and my wife and daughter dove 4 2-tank dive plus the night dive.

I think what made the difference for us was the dive operater we found. The dive outfit is called "Scubatony" and it is run by a former cop from LA who moved to Coz because he loved diving and instructing. He was great to deal with. The first night we met him he gave us a cell phone and told us that anything we needed anytime, he was just a phone call away. He specializes in small groups and he told us that he had a boat for us all week and that he was at our disposal to dive as much or as little as we wanted.

We were picked up at the dock of the hotel at nine the next moring and as promised we were his only customers that day and all the rest of the week. Over the course of the week we hit all of the sites, including some deep wall dive to 100' with the kids who absolutely loved the whole scuba thing, and took to Tony from the start.

Tony also helped us with SI time like places to see and go as well as places to avoid...

All in all it was without question the best vacation we have ever taken, due in no small measure to Tony and the individualized attention he gave us. His prices were in line with all the other dive ops. His service was outstanding, he loves what he does and it shows. When we go back we will go back to Tony without question.

You can find out more about Tony at www.scubatony.com .

I'd be happy to share any other info if anyone would like more...

Thanks,

I used Aldora divers, thought they were great. http://www.aldora.com/
1. they have 6 packs and group according to ability.
2. use high pressure steel tanks which gives you alot of bottom time and takes weight off your belt
3. will pick up at hotel docks
4. take rinse & store your gear for you.
5. everybody dives with computers- if you don't have one they will lend you one (no charge).

they may seem a bit more expensive up front but they are quality dive op and you get more bottom time. Our divemaster had limited knowledge of marine biology fortunately dive bud is marine biologist.

There is a reason for that. Her operation does rinse and store gear if you want. Also provides large, soft, fluffy towels to dry with, snacks and drinks, and best of all, lets you dive your computer.
