I know it is a 400yd free swim, an 800 yd snorkle and fins, a 15 min tread, and a 100yd tired diver tow, but have no clue how many points are awarded for how many minutes.

I also know you have to score twelve or more pts...

I'd appreciate some kind soul telling me the timing info I don't have.

Thanks!

Sean

Here you go:

400 yard swim

(no aids such as fins, snorkel or mask using any stroke or combo of strokes)

6 minutes or less = 5 pts
6 - 8 minutes = 4 pts
8 - 10 minutes = 3 pts
10 - 12 minutes = 2 pts
12 minutes = 1 pt

15 minute water tread

(using no aids, hands must be out of water for last 5 minutes)

Perform satisfactorily = 5 pts
Stayed afloat but hands not out of water for 2 mins = 3 pts
Used side or bottom but no more than twice = 1 pt

800 yard timed snorkel swim

(using mask, fin, and snorkel but no BC/floatation aid, face in water without using arms to swim, nonstop)

13 minutes or less = 5 pts
13 - 15 minutes = 4 pts
15 - 17 minutes = 3 pts
17 - 19 minutes = 2 pts
Over 19 minutes = 1 pt

100 yard rescue diver tow

(wearing full scuba, push or tow diver 100 yards nonstop)

2 minutes or less = 5 pts
2 - 3 minutes = 4 pts
3 - 4 minutes = 3 pts
4 - 5 minutes = 2 pts
Over 5 minutes = 1 pt

You must score 12 out of possible 20 points to pass these tests.

The water tread is really affected by the person's bouyancy. I'm negatively bouyant in fresh water, and finding treading water much harder than swimming.

My non-swimmer arse had more than 12 points by the time I got to the 400yd swim, so all I had to do was finish..which I did in like 14 minutes....

Kriterian, did PADI recently change how the points are awarded? When I took DM last year at this time, the last 2 minutes with your hands out of water for the tread was required for 5 points...I swam the 400 in 14 minutes and got a 2 I think.

just curious

Just in case anyone is planning to do their DM in a country that uses the metric system, you'll have to swim a bit further as the distances are in metres instead of yards. Then again you do get a bit more time. If anyone's interested the metric versions are:

400 Meter Swim
  • Under 6 min. 30 sec = 5 pts
  • 6 minutes 30 seconds to 8 minutes 40 seconds = 4 pts
  • 8 minutes 40 seconds to 11 minutes = 3 pts
  • 11 to 13 minutes = 2pts
  • more than 13 minutes = 1pt
  • stopped = incomplete
15 Minute Tread
15 minute tread water with hands, not arms, out of the water for the last 2 minutes.

  • Performed satisfactorily = 5pts
  • Stayed afloat, but hands not out of the water entire 2 minutes = 3 pts
  • Used side/bottom for momentary support no more than twice = 1pt
  • Used side/bottom for support more than twice = incomplete

800 Meter Snorkel Swim
  • Under 14 minutes = 5 pts
  • 14 to 16 minutes 30 seconds = 4 pts
  • 16 minutes 30 seconds to 18 minutes 30 seconds = 3 pts
  • 18 minutes 30 seconds to 21 minutes = 2 pts
  • more than 21 minutes = 1 pt
  • stopped = incomplete
100 meter Tired Diver Tow
  • Under 2 minutes 10 seconds = 5pts
  • 2 minutes 10 seconds to 3 minutes 15 seconds = 4pts
  • 3 minutes 15 seconds to 4 minutes 20 seconds = 3pts
  • 4 minutes 20 seconds to 5 minutes 30 seconds = 2pts
  • More than 5 minutes 30 seconds = 1 pt
  • Stopped = incomplete

Again you'll need a minimum of 12 out of 20 to pass the tests. I'm almost sure that all 4 test have to be passed so you can't get 4 on three of them and flunk the last one.

my little sister scored 18 points on the dm swim tests,
She beat me by 1 point :). We did all of our tests in a pool, which IMHO takes way too much time off the 100 and 800. For the 400 I did flip turns so it was no biggie.

Go figure! When I did my 400 yd swim I completed it in 12:28 and was told I failed it and had to repeat it and do it under 12:00 minutes (which I did). I figured since I had the 12 points already from the other tests all I had to do was complete the swim, so I swam with just my legs because I was exhausted from doing the other portions. I was wrong and had to come back and do it again.

Encouragements,

Try not to do all you swims in the same day. Practice. I wasn't concerned about passing so I did the big ones first. I also did my swims in a lake.
