I don't know from PADI since all my certs are from other agencies, so please forgive the idiot question.

My friend in Cozumel is an instructor and has offered to do my son's girlfriend's PADI AOW course for her if we supply the materials. He specified that she needs the hologram that comes with a new manual as well as a pic envelope. He says he does not have a good source for these in Mexico, and can't get them through his employer since he'll be doing this on his own time. I've found a source for a pic envelope. All the manuals I can find for sale online appear to lack the hologram. We have no local dive shops that have PADI materials (there's an SSI shop about 25 miles away).

Can anyone point me to some resources for obtaining the needed materials?

As far as I know, PADI only sells through PADI dive shops or instructors. As an instructor, your friend in Cozumel should be able to order directly from PADI. He won’t get the small discount of ordering in quantity that his dive shop would, and it might take a bit more time for shipping. But otherwise, it could well be the most practical approach.

My wife and I did ours this summer here in Canada.

No hologram on the course materials.

There is no hologram for any PADI courses below the level of Divemaster. in addition, if you and your friend are worried about the efficiency of the Mexican Mail service, a much better option than the PIC envelope is for him to submit the PIC online thru PADI's Pro website. It eliminates the chance of anything being lost or delayed in the mail. It will also be processed faster than a paper PIC envelope.

in addition, your friend can order the materials from PADI but have them shipped directly to your address instead of to him in Mexico.

No real need to have the text book. Go to PADI elearning and do it online..as to having a "instructor" do the advance for you guys, something does not sound right here about his/her inability to get text book/pic cards / thinking there is a need for hologram/..Is this person truly current with their insurance and agency requirements? One way to find out is to get his/her instructor number and to go on PADI on line and check credentials.

That's far more expensive than the book.

Is this person truly current with their insurance and agency requirements?

No idea, really.

One way to find out is to get his/her instructor number and to go on PADI on line and check credentials.

That's not something I'm going to quiz a friend about when he's offering to do a significant favor.

If he is not current and insured, he is doing a significant disservice. This is not a favor. I instruct friends, family and associates and always charge them. Many times the saying, "you get what you pay for" holds true.

As for the hologram, there is only one PADI hologram. It comes with the Divemaster and Instuctor crew-paks. It is part of the crew-pak, not an individual book.
