Hey guys, new to the forum and also a new diver. I have a question about a wetsuit I was considering to buy. It is a farmer john style, but they said it is a rescue diver one. It is all orange with various reflectors on it. I dive in socal and it is a 7mm. I tried it on and it feels comfortable and the guys at the local dive shop said it was very durable and that the coast guard have used them. My question is, would buying an all orange wetsuit be a bad idea? Reasons being that it is for rescue divers. Another example of colors, when I was looking at regs and octo, I liked them both in yellow, but they said they have the octo to be yellow only so it is easily visible for someone in need of it. Thanks.

I don't know about the wetsuit but I dive both my second stages in black. You are not required to have a yellow safe second. Look at all the tech divers, they use both reg's in black.

No problems with an orange wetsuit. At least you don't have to worry about being shot by a hunter on the way to the beach! :D

There's no such thing as a "rescue diver" wetsuit. That sounds like a marketing gimmick. But you can use it, no problem. Your buddy may appreciate it, too, as you'll be easy to spot underwater. Try keeping track of an all-black diver underwater.

No requirements for the octo to be any color, or your primary to be different. If you want them both yellow, go for it. This shop is blowing smoke. Is the different colored one more expensive, by chance? As a new diver, you have to realize that there are shops out there that are in it just to make a buck, and if they can upsell you with something, they will.

Just know which is which when you're gearing up.

Hey thanks for the quick answers.

I should clarify, they said it is like rescue diver design, not specifically designated for it or anything.
Also, the regs and octo are the same exact price, its just they said that the ones they carry come in black for an octo. The ones packaged with the first stage and I looked at other online prices of the same stuff (manufacture mares) and they were the same price or cheaper at the store. I feel as if they weren't trying to rip me off but let me know what there way of doing it is.

Sounds good; if the price is right for you, and you like them, go for it. Remember, you may not want to get expensive stuff at first, as a new diver, you'll want to experiment before you invest heavily. From the gear I first bought, my reg set and computer is the only one still in use (my first wetsuit as well, but it's so compressed that I only use it in the tropics now). You may find in a year that you want a drysuit instead of that wetsuit; and a 7mm isn't a suit you'd want in Bonaire, for example, but I think it'd be good for your area (*Note- I've never dove California)

I'm not saying that they will rip you off, and they probably aren't, but I can be cynical about shops. Just remember that there are those unscrupulous shops out there. Enjoy your diving.

I know a lot of folks here say to try before you buy and that is great if you can afford to rent and still get to the water. For me, I bought two sets of everything because my wife and I were both getting cert'd. The only thing I wish that I had done different is that I would have spent more time researching the gear I wanted. I now have a jacket style BC along with a BP&W along with a first stage that I have up for sale because I did not do better research. That's just my gear, my wife has spare gear also because we did not know what we wanted. We started out in wetsuits and within one year moved to drysuits, if I had gone dry to begin with I could have saved myself $1200. I love my drysuit and would not give it up for anything. What I am getting at, is to spend a lot of time researching here and other places. Read as much as you can about different gear and why different people like what they dive. Don't listen to all the BS about this piece of gear is better than that piece. All that matters is that what you dive works the best for you. A lot of people don't like the harness I use for BP&W because it is not "simple". I say, "Oh well, I don't care", I like it, it dives right for me and that's all that matters.

Good luck with your search...ask lots of questions!!!

:cool2:

if you decide to get that one --- at least your buddy will be able to keep track of you easier :) but seriously - color is personal preference (despite some "purists") and the important bits are Does it fit and is it the right thickness for you and where you are diving, and is it in your budget. there are at least one or two divers that dive very bright colored wetsuits on SB (like bright yellow)

If you like it, buy it. I've seen exposure suits of many different colors (especially dry suits). You'll stand out like a sore thumb in orange, but if that doesn't bother you what difference does it make! Just try not to get one like mine:

LOL -- although i think the OP wants an exposure suit, not an exposed suit --- and at least you were wearing something under the wetsuit.

I'd hate to have been around you when that thing went... must have been one hell of a bubble!
