I end up with the Mobby's self donning. I like self donning better. The DUI is out of my price range and the Mobby was on sale for a good price.

Hey, if they're still making your suit, now is a good time to have 'em slap that hood on.

With a wet hood, frequent exposure to cold water will result in thickening of the bone in way of the ear canals and contribute to ear problems down the road.
Wish someone would've told me about this 35 years ago, I've lost 35% of my hearing & just had ear surgury 2 weeks ago.

Wow Bob, that's no good! Do you have some references to this problem? I would like to do more research on it. Would you mind if I start a new thread quoting you in the medical section?

I did exactly what you are asking about I cut the bib off of my hood. I left it a little long so that if i wish to I can use it with my wet suit and it works fine. Now grant it cold water by my definition is anything below 65f.

I sent off an e-mail so I should have the "back up" within a day or so.

Hi Bob:

This is in our ENT section.

Surfer's Ear (Bony exostosis)
This is a blockage of the inner portion of the ear canal by a bony growth called exostosis.
This is more commonly seen in surfers, but occasionally can be seen in cold water divers.
It is thought to be due to the cooling effect of evaporating water on surfers - and on the effect of cold water on divers. It can cause problems in divers by blocking the egress of cerumen and thus the canal, producing the possibility of an external ear squeeze, decreased ability to equalize, alternobaric vertigo and caloric vertigo.
Prevention is by the use of ear plugs in surfers and hoods or vented ear plugs in divers.

Definitive treatment is by an operative procedure called canalectomy - or the excision of the bony area of the ear canal that is blocking the canal.

I did as ID suggested with my first drysuit: cut the wetsuit hood skirt off and used it as a hood for my drysuit. It worked quite well as it fit my head nicely. The problem that I ran into was when I attempted to us my FFM: couldn't figure out how to make it seal while wearing the hood. My new drysuit has an attatched hood, which works extremely well with the FFM and I figure if I'm going to be spending good money on a drysuit, why not dive dry? Half-ass dry just doesn't work, and that's why I never went Semi-Dry. If you can get an attatched hood, great, otherwise cut the skirt off and use it and spend the money saved on something else of need.

I pondered this attached/non attached hood thing for a while before I bought my dry suit. After trying a dry suit on with an attached hood I decided it wasn't for me.....it was like putting on a wetsuit-pulling and yanking-the wimpering, tears flowing.

The beauty of my dry suit is that even though it's a back entry I can put it on myself-I just use a really long cord that attaches to the zipper. After the zipper is shut I detach to cord, using a clip.

I have dove dry in Minnesota with just my wetsuit hood on and when I exit the water my head is HOT-my hands are cold but my head is HOT and that is in 40 degree water. I do get a little area of exposure on the back of my neck but I don't seem to notice the cold there-lots of blood perfusion. Only my hands get cold-very cold- and that's due to Raynaud's disease, I believe.

I had the opportunity to dive a Mobbys ArmourShell over the weekend, assume this is the one you got, and I must say, "Nice grab!". I really liked the suit and it is truely self-donning. now if only I could get the wife to "ok" the purchase. :) BTW, did you get the underwear with it? They are extremely comfy.

I just chopped the skirt off. It works fine. Just make sure you burn the loose threads so it doesnt come apart. It doesnt look pretty but who the heck cares it works fine!

When i go warm water diving I just use that same hood. It isnt like im going to need the extra warmth of the skirt anyway. I just want something on my head.

Its totally up to you if you want to buy another hood or not but Im just waiting till my hood wears out to get a dry suit hood.
