Update: I received the replacement size today, and it's a MUUUCH better fit. It just feels "right", and by comparing the two I see where I was going wrong initially. 
Good range of movement, and now I'm itching to go dive. Thank you for all of your advice, everyone.
Pete, thank you especially for your advice on doffing/donning the suit; I took the risk of trying it on alone at home, and was able to actually get it off once I threw the dog in her kennel for curious interference.
Now, it's glaringly obvious that I could stand to lose about 10 pounds around the belly. Must dive it off! ;-)
