Back from my business trip.......took the trusty digital bathroom scale to the basement and........

Weight me dressed (t-shirt, 501's, shoes)................196.1

Weight with my travel rig (Al BP, 18 lb wing, STA, dual cam bands)...................203.0

Weight with my cold water rig (SS BP, 36 lb wing, dual cam bands).....................207.2

I was very surprised...................

I would have bet money than my cold water rig was 2X my travel rig........

I also would have thought that my BP/W combo would have been lighter........since 7 lbs is BCD weight range, of course in water the BCD might be 2-3 lbs buoyant, where the BP/W is not.......

I used my darling brides tank for the picture, the only AL 80's in the house.............:)

Yes, it is about right measurement. whenever we are talking about a travel rig (or warm water rig), it is about 4lb~6lb difference unless you get a exclusively travel oriented rig....

But, 4~6lb difference is huge because many travelers pay an extra fee due to only few lb difference...

Funny you should mention that....

I am leaving in a week and was / am having issues with weight...not me....my bags..;)

My rig with SS/BP-6lbs, and a weighted STA of 6lbs, 30lbs wing add the rings and ss buckles...on scale is 17lbs.

I was considering taking it south..but will have to break down and get an aluminum plate with a lighter STA. So far the total weight of my dive bag..less regs and lights is 37 pounds. Allowance is 44 pounds for a sport bag. A second check bag is also 20kg(44 pounds) plus you get a 5kg(10 pound) carry on allowance. Shaving a few pounds here and there will go a long way....bring back more junk and rum!

Or use a wing that doesn't require an STA. The Hog wing has molded ridges to help position the tank and the DSS wing really does it right with molded support blocks.

Another good way is to ship it out to your destination if you travel in a domestic area. FedEx rate used to be cheaper than your second baggage fee (usually $25). In addition, you can avoid all hassle with TSA at the airport.

Just my 2 bar

I found my BP/W is only about a pound heavier than my old oceanic probe BC.
My SS plate, transplate harness, and rec wing comes in about 10-11 lbs.

We did not have any issues with weight replacing BC's with BP/W, and thats with a SS plate. It was much nicer to have the added space in the bag without a jacket BC filling it. Also put the plate on the outside to help protect the stuff on the inside from the baggage monkeys.

Amen.
