Hi,

My husband and I will be in Cozumel for a week, June 24-July 1, diving with Dive Paradise. My question is about weather. I have seen the forecasts on weather.com for the beginning of our time there, and it includes isolated thunderstorms, showers (20-60% likelihood), and a partly cloudy day. Is our diving screwed, or is this just the normal summer afternoon showers for Coz? We really want to get 3 dives in per day, and actually see the sun, as this is a vacation. Any thoughts on the weather.com forecasts vs. what actually happens in Coz?

Thanks,

Erin

You'll be just fine.

You might be a little wet from the rain. :D

Really from the four times I've been down there, I've never had a day that I considered it to be too bad to dive (or too bad to do anything for that matter). Now there might be days that the harbor master closes the marina for the dive boats due to the water being too rough for smaller boats, but you could still shore dive. :)

Come to think of it, Wilma was about the only time I heard that the weather was rough enough to not get in a dive.

Last July 4th we were blown out of a day of diving because of tropical storm Cindy...some of the larger boats were going out and the shore diving in front of our hotel was cancelled.....by afternoon our dive op said the harbour was open but we opted to wait the seas were still pretty high and still raining somewhat....next day was clear and seas back to normal.....I wouldn't worry too much....can't do anything about it anyway:D

Just got back on Saturday (and starting to dream of our next trip). I also thought that we were doomed, because of the forecast. We had a 10-15 minute rainstorm almost every day, and then the sun came back out. It rained on us on our way out to the first dive site on a couple of days, but no big deal. The dive boat we were on has a canopy. The heaviest rain came when it rained at night. We left our wetsuits on the balcony, and ended up with damp suits the next day. We didn't miss a single dive due to weather. :D Be aware that it will be very hot and humid, so the need to stay hydrated is increased. I also went through lots of t-shirts!

Have a great time!

Again, this time of year "Thunderstorms" or chance of, or "scattered" are forecast for every day, and every day you can probably see some storm going by somewhere off in the distance (or closer) at one point or another during the day (or one passes by in the night when you aren't looking). It really isn't an issue unless a tropical L pressure system gets stuck over there, which is extremely rare...

You have a 100% chance of getting wet. LOL. I have been there the last 2 years during this general time period. As mentioned above, there are generally a few thundershowers that pop-up and blow out fairly quickly. Should not impact your overall plans. I've never had a dive cancelled due to a shower yet. The only complaint I have even contemplated about it is the ride back to the dock getting pelted with rain. Ouch!!

PS: It always seems to rain the most the day we have a car reserved with plans to spend the day on the wild side.
